Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler has revealed that he's already suffering from short-term memory loss due to the impact of two concussions this season.
Ekeler, 29, sustained a concussion in week three of the season when the team defeated the Cincinnati Bengals , before coming back and getting another in their loss to the Dallas Cowboys - with the latter seeing him placed on Injury Reserve.
After his second concussion, Ekeler admitted that he has no memory of being taken off-the-field, even though he had appeared fully conscious at the time.
Mike Tomlin's prophetic chat with George Pickens speaks volumes after Hard Knocks premiere Christian McCaffrey breaks silence on 'humbling' season-ending injury for 49ers In an interview with 106.7 The Fan, Ekeler said: "I didnt even remember how I got off the field.
I had short-term memory loss.
I remember my wife was sitting in the room and Im getting evaluated by our medical staff in the back room.
Thats when I started to remember things." In the incident against the Cowboys, Ekeler had been returning a kick when hit from his blindside, being down on the ground for several minutes with the camera crew not showing replays of the collision.
Ekeler eventually got back to his feet and walked off the field by his own power, with him being taken to a local hospital as a precaution before being released the same day.
Perhaps worryingly, Ekeler is believed to have suffered multiple concussions throughout his career - playing a position in which players are hit more so than others - with the veteran having officially being ruled out in the concussion protocol four times while in the NFL.
The back could be held out for the rest of the season while on the injury reserve list - needing to miss at lease three more games.
The veteran running back has 355 rushing yards and four touchdowns in his first season with the Commanders after joining from the Los Angeles Chargers where he had spent nine years of his career - being vocally unhappy with the team not paying him after years of impressive production.
Ekeler's wife, Melanie Wilking, is a viral TikTok star who had featured in a Netflix documentary, 'Dancing with the Devil', in which she and her family had accused her sister of abandoning her family to join 7M films - a talent management agency which has been described as a cult.
