The Bruins were getting embarrassed, so they decided to turn the game into a slugfest.

Tuesdays game against the Jets in Winnipeg turned ugly in the third period, with multiple fights breaking out and the two head coaches screaming at one another as Boston gave up five goals in the third in an 8-1 loss.

After Alex Iafallos power-play goal 7:19 into the third put the Jets ahead, 6-1, Bruins forward Trent Frederic went after the Jets David Gustafsson, who had never been in an NHL fight.

Gustafsson was helped off the ice after Frederic landed a big right hand and was being evaluated by Winnipegs medical team after the game.

Then Bruins forward Mark Kastelic and Jets defenseman Logan Stanley threw down, with both guys getting game misconducts.

Jets coach Scott Arniel, a former Rangers assistant under Alain Vigneault, then started screaming at Joe Sacco, the Bruins interim head coach who replaced the fired Jim Montgomery last month.

Furious about the Bruins antics, Jets captain Adam Lowry sought a measure of revenge as he and Bruins big man Nikita Zadorov agreed to fight after the ensuing faceoff.

The two attempted several haymakers for roughly 10 seconds before the refs broke it up.

Stuff happens.

I mean, obviously you dont want to see that happen to Gus but at the end of the day, our two big boys just settled it back down, Arniel said after the game, according to Sportsnet .

Dont like all the stuff that happened but its hockey.

Theyre pissed off at us ...

at the end of the day, I just like the fact that we stuck together and did what we had to do.

Arniel was cryptic when asked about his fiery exchange with Sacco.

Something else happened ...

dont need to get into it, he said.

Winnipeg (42 points) has been one of the best teams in the NHL so far, while Boston (33 points) is 7-3 since its coaching shakeup.

The Bruins loss snapped a four-game winning streak..
