Dodgers manager raises possibility of Ohtani pitching in playoffs ATLANTA Shohei Ohtani did some long tossing in the outfield before the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Atlanta Braves on Friday, another step in the two-way stars road to returning to the mound.
Could he possibly pitch in the postseason? Anything is possible, manager Dave Roberts said.
I hope thats on his mind as far as motivation for his rehab.
The odds of it coming to pass are very slim, but theyre not zero.
Ohtani has not pitched this season his first with the Dodgers after elbow surgery.
Even so, hes having a potentially historic campaign as the teams designated hitter, trying to become the first player with 50 homers and 50 stolen bases in a major league season.
Going into the opener of a four-game series in Atlanta, Ohtani had 47 homers and 48 stolen bases putting him on pace to surpass 50 in both categories with 16 games left in the regular season.
In other injury news While trying to remain optimistic about getting even more value out of Ohtani this season, the first-place Dodgers endured a setback in Tyler Glasnows recovery from elbow tendinitis.
A right-hander who is 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA, Glasnow was supposed to pitch a simulated game on Friday.
But the session was cut short during his warm-ups in the bullpen when he felt arm discomfort, raising concerns that his injury is more serious than initially thought.
Glasnow went on the 15-day injured list Aug.
16 in what was described then as more of a precautionary move.
Obviously, its a setback, Roberts said.
I dont know what that means as far as the coming days.
I do know that were just going to kind of reassess and see how it feels over the next couple of days and see when we can pick up the ball again.
Clearly, the team is concerned Glasnow wont be able to pitch again this season, another blow to an injury plagued rotation.
Its certainly not helpful and positive, Roberts said, Johnson helps No.

20 Arizona 31-7 on Friday night in a rare nonconference matchup of new Big 12 rivals.
The loss ended Arizonas nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Johnson had 156 yards passing and 110 yards rushing, and D.J.
Giddens added 86 yards rushing and a score, as Kansas State (3-0) rebounded from a lackluster road with over Tulane with an emphatic victory over the desert Wildcats.
Noah Fifita had 268 yards passing for Arizona (2-1) with an interception.
Tetairoa McMillan had 11 catches for 138 yards, but the potential first-round NFL draft pick was unable to turn any of those grabs into a big play or touchdown.
The schools agreed to the matchup before Arizona left the Pac-12 for the Big 12.
And with neither having enough time to find a replacement opponent, Kansas State and Arizona kept the game but without it counting in the conference standings.
Christian McCaffrey will miss another game for the 49ers and could be headed to IR SANTA CLARA All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has been ruled out of this weekends game for the San Francisco 49ers because of his lingering calf and Achilles injuries and could be headed to injured reserve.
McCaffrey was held out of practice on Friday, a day after experiencing pain in practice.
He was then ruled out of the game Sunday against Minnesota after expressing hope earlier in the week that he could play.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will discuss whether to shut McCaffrey down for at least four more weeks by placing him on injured reserve after saying earlier in the week that wasnt under consideration.
Its something were considering now, Shanahan said Friday.
Yesterday was his worst day.
Its on and off, but with yesterday having the most pain, its something were going to be discussing here the next 24 hours.
McCaffrey got hurt early in training camp and missed four weeks of practice before returning to the practice field last week.
He was a late scratch for the opener on Monday night against the Jets and now is sidelined again.
McCaffrey led the NFL last season with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and was tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns, winning AP Offensive Player of the Year.
Its one of those deals that can be feeling good one day and then the next day it flares, general manager John Lynch told flagship radio station KNBR in his weekly interview.
So its been frustrating for Christian, I know, and frustrating for us only because hes such a great player.
But primary in our mind is the long view.
Christian is such an elite player.
He changes us, he makes us different.
Its also nice to see we can function without him.
The Niners made up for McCaffreys absence thanks to a strong performance from backup Jordan Mason, who had 28 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown in San Franciscos 32-19 victory over the New York Jets.
MLB teams to have helmet ads in postseason featuring ostrich logo of German apparel company Strauss NEW YORK Major League Baseball teams will have advertising on their helmets during the postseason.
MLB said Friday it reached a deal for the postseason ads through 2027 with Strauss, a German apparel company that entered the US market last year.
Ads of 5-by-0.92 inches (12.7-by-2.3 centimeters) will be on each side of every helmet featuring STRAUSS in capital letters in white alongside the companys ostrich logo silhouetted by a red square, with an alternate color for red helmets.
Strauss also will appear on the helmets of the 120 affiliated minor league teams from 2025-27.
MLB previously had helmet ads in select international games dating to at least 2000 and has allowed jersey ads since 2023.
The general use of ads was agreed to by the players association in the 2022 labor contract, and 23 of the 30 teams have jersey patch ads.
Engelbert Strauss GmbH & Co.
KG was founded in 1948.
Major League Soccer became the first of the major North American leagues to allow jersey ads in 2007.
The NBA started selling sponsorship logos for the 2017-18 season, and the NHL launched helmet ads for the 2020-21 season and began jersey advertising the following season.

Lionel Messi set to return to Inter Miami lineup after 2-month injury recovery FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
Lionel Messi has been cleared to play again after taking two months to recover from an ankle injury, and Inter Miami indicated that the eight-time Ballon dOr winner will return to the lineup on Saturday when the team plays host to Philadelphia.
Messi is available, Inter Miami coach Gerardo Tata Martino said Friday before the teams training session.
Martino did not reveal if Messi would start, enter the game as a substitute or if theres a plan for a minutes restriction.
His return will be yet another lift to the club with the best record in Major League Soccer.
Messi had missed nine consecutive MLS matches and 15 matches overall this season, yet the team still has the top mark in the league and has wrapped up a playoff berth.
Messis most recent appearance for Inter Miami was June 1, missing time first while playing for Argentina in the Copa America tournament and then because of the ankle issue.
Messi was injured while playing for Argentina in the Copa America final on July 14.
He returned to group training with Inter Miami late last month, and because of a break for ongoing World Cup qualifying matches the team hasnt played in two weeks buying him some more time for recovery and conditioning.
Messi has 12 goals and 13 assists in 12 MLS games this season.
Despite missing basically half of Inter Miamis games, his 13 assists are third-most in MLS and hes tied for 13th in goals.
Injured American Magic helmsman Goodison will miss start of Americas Cup playoffs BARCELONA, Spain American Magic hopes that injured helmsman Paul Goodison will be back at some point in the Americas Cup, but he will not be starting the playoffs, teammate Tom Slingsby said Friday.
Goodison sustained an unspecified injury on Sept.
7 near the end of the opening round-robin phase.
Six days later, Slingsby revealed that Goodison had been hurt when he had a fall on the boat.
The New York Yacht Club American Magic would not disclose the nature of Goodisons injury or his exact condition when questioned by The Associated Press.
Slingsby said Goodison wont be ready to sail when American Magic faces Italys Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli on Saturday, and did not have a timeline for when his co-skipper might be back in action.
Unfortunately, he wont be with us tomorrow.
We are still taking it day by day for when he will return, Slingsby said at a news conference.
We all wish Goodie a quick recovery and we hope that we can still see him in this competition.
Goodison was an Olympic gold medalist in 2008.
This is his third Americas Cup overall and his second with American Magic.

The team would not say whether Goodison was hospitalized.
The doctors are with him each day and assessing him each day.
He was weighed in for our team, so we are hopeful that he will be joining us again, Slingsby said.
Its a tough one where he really wants to be out there with us, but he is not able to at the moment.
Its just going to be assessing how quickly he can feel ready to come back on join us.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars will host the Browns at TrEverBank Stadium JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
Trevor Lawrence will see his name all over Jacksonvilles stadium on Sunday.
The Jaguars will host the Cleveland Browns at TrEverBank Stadium instead of EverBank Stadium, a marketing promotion designed to highlight a collaboration between the popular quarterback and the Jacksonville-based financial services company.
Workers spent Thursday and Friday adding temporary signage throughout the stadium, including rebranding the biggest letters on the sides of the city-owned stadium.
EverBank and Lawrence announced a partnership last month that makes one of the highest paid quarterbacks in NFL history a brand ambassador for the company.
He is featured in the banks newest TV spot, Sign.
He also is featured in online content, newspaper ads, financial center signage and social media commercials, particularly during football games.
Trevor Lawrence represents everything that EverBank stands for performance, excellence, and a deep commitment to the community, said Megan Johnson, EverBanks chief marketing officer.
PWHL New York Sirens making the move to play home games out of the NHL Devils Prudential Center The New York Sirens are making the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, their primary home entering the PWHLs second season, the team announced on Friday.
The move to the home of the NHL New Jersey Devils was anticipated and comes after the newly named Sirens split their inaugural season playing out of three rinks across the tri-state region.
The team struggled attracting fans in opening the season playing home games in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and also played games at the Islanders home, UBS Arena.
The team then closed the season at Prudential, where New York drew a season-best crowd of 5,132 on April 20.
We saw last season how quickly Prudential Center and our loyal fans could create an electrifying atmosphere, Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust said in a statement.
Our players and staff are thrilled and cant wait to play again in this high-class venue and call this place home for the upcoming season.
A pricing chart released by the Sirens to season-ticket holders, and obtained by The Associated Press, indicated the team will play 13 of its 15 home game at the New Jersey facility.
The PWHL has yet to release its schedule, which will have each team playing 30 games up from 24 last year with the season set to open in early December.
The league has previously announced plans to increase the number of neutral-site games after playing in Detroit and Pittsburgh last season.
The PWHL was exploring the possibility of the Sirens playing at least one home game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
New York finished last in the standings in the six-team league, and selected Canadian national team and Princeton star forward Sarah Fillier with the No.
1 pick in the draft in June.
The Sirens also announced they are relocating their training facility to the Devils former practice home in West Orange, New Jersey.
Ravens rookie Nate Wiggins wont play against the Raiders after being involved in a car crash OWINGS MILLS, Md.
Baltimore Ravens rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins will not play Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders after coach John Harbaugh said the first-round pick was involved in a car crash Wednesday.
Wiggins was listed as out with a neck injury/concussion.
Hes fine, hes healthy, hes fine, Harbaugh said Friday.
Hes just not going to be able to play.
Wiggins, the 30th pick in the draft out of Clemson, made two tackles in Baltimores season-opening loss at Kansas City.
Its a car accident, and it doesnt seem real serious, Harbaugh said.
Beyond that, what do I know? I dont know anything.
Im coaching the team and trying to get ready to play.
Thats really what it is.
Rookie linebacker Adisa Isaac is doubtful with a hamstring injury, and veteran Kyle Van Noy questionable with a right eye injury.
Van Noy earlier this week criticized the Chiefs medical staff for being slow to respond when he was injured during the game last week.
Of course I have more to say, Van Noy said Friday, but Im not going to get into that, just because Im honestly all focused on the Raiders now.
Rangers Max Scherzer set to make his return to the mound on Saturday in Seattle SEATTLE Texas Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer is expected to return from the injured list on Saturday in Seattle after a successful workout Friday.
Scherzer was limited earlier this year after offseason back surgery, then began to experience shoulder and nerve pain in his right arm after he returned to the rotation.
Scherzer is 2-4 with a 3.89 ERA in eight starts and 39.1 innings this season.
His last start was July 30.
He had a successful rehab appearance on Saturday for Triple-A Round Rock in Las Vegas, throwing 59 pitches and striking out four in four scoreless innings.
Even with the defending World Series champion Rangers all but eliminated from postseason contention, Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, felt it was important to prove he can overcome the injuries that have plagued the last 18 months of his once-dominant career.
Its just frustrating because ...
I pride myself on making my starts, going 30-plus starts every single year, Scherzer said before Texas played Seattle on Friday night.
To be sitting on the IL like this, its boring.
Its frustrating.
Youre not out there competing with the team.
Ive never dealt with this in my career.
So, you know, Im sick of it.
The 40-year-old said he was not concerned about his command or the liveliness of his arm.
His current focus as he finishes the season is to employ what hes learned about the status of his arm.
Hell focus on new aspects of training in the offseason that he hopes will alleviate the discomfort hes been feeling.
Its just proving that Im healthy ...
that Im not dealing with (thoracic outlet syndrome), Im not dealing with shoulder injuries, Scherzer said.
Im managing what Ive got going on and I can be out there, I can be healthy and I can make my starts.
Scherzers expected start Saturday at Seattle will be the third straight highly anticipated appearance by a starter for the Rangers.
Prized prospect Kumar Rocker pitched Thursday and Jacob deGrom returned from surgery on Friday for his first appearance since April 28, 2023.
Manager Bruce Bochy said deGrom and Scherzer would be likely on a similar pitch count of 60.
Its been exciting the last few days as weve been prepping for this and just getting ready for these three guys to go, Bochy said.
Committee hopes to elevate Sacramento State to FBS level of football Local officials have launched a committee aimed at helping Sacramento State move to the highest level of college football with hopes of getting an invitation down the road to either the Pac-12 or Mountain West conferences.
The committee, named SAC 12 and independent from the school, includes state and local politicians, business and union leaders, and former Hornets receiver and NFL player Otis Amey.
It was launched on Friday, a day after the latest round of conference realignment hit the FBS.
The Pac-12 announced on Thursday that Mountain West schools Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State would join holdovers Washington State and Oregon State, starting in 2026, in the conference that lost 10 of its 12 members to new conferences earlier this year.
The Pac-12 still needs to add two more members and there are now also potential openings in the Mountain West, which will have seven full-time members and Hawaii for football after those four schools depart.
Its exciting to see key members of the Sacramento community celebrating the success of the Sacramento State Athletics program and sharing their interest in helping shape the vision of the future, the school said in a statement.
It makes us proud to be part of such a wonderful, supportive community, and we will continue to support our student-athletes at the highest levels possible.
Sacramento State currently plays in the Big Sky conference at the FCS level.
The Hornets won seven conference championships last season and have made the FCS playoffs in football the last three seasons.
Sacramento is Californias capital city and the 20th-largest media market in the country.
The school has more than 30,000 students as the fourth-largest university in the Cal State system.
As a proud alumni, I am excited to get to work to bring Sacramento State to a major conference like the Pac-12, said California State Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen, a member of the committee.
Our student athletes, coaches, administration and fans are eager to compete at the highest level, and Sacramentos diverse, metropolitan culture, size and importance to our state would make us a great addition to the conference.
Sacramento State has 21 athletic teams including mens football, mens baseball, men and womens basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, tennis, and track and field and womens gymnastics, beach volleyball, volleyball and softball.
Another player from top-ranked Georgia arrested for reckless driving ATHENS, Ga.
Georgia cornerback Daniel Harris was arrested on a reckless driving charge after police said he was driving 106 mph, the latest player on the top-ranked Bulldogs to run afoul of the law behind the wheel.
The sophomore from Miami was stopped by Athens-Clarke County police and booked into jail on five misdemeanor charges at 10:40 p.m.
Thursday, according to an online report.
He was released about an hour later on a total of $50 in bonds.
In addition to reckless driving, Harris was charged with no proof of insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, failing to use safety belts and illegal tinting of the windows.
According to an incident report obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald, Harris was stopped near the Georgia campus after passing two other vehicles on a rainy evening in a 2018 Jeep Cherokee.
He was clocked doing 41 mph over the speed limit of 65 mph.
The arrest occurred less than 48 hours before Georgia (2-0) played its first Southeastern Conference game at Kentucky.
Coach Kirby Smart has acknowledged struggling to get his players to drive safely an issue that took on heightened importance since a crash that killed a player and a recruiting staffer in January 2023, shortly after the team celebrated its second straight national championship.
Football players at the school have been involved in at least two dozen driving-related violations such as DUI, reckless driving or speeding, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution has reported.
Offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy were killed in the crash that occurred while LeCroy and defensive tackle Jalen Carter were racing.
Smart has steadfastly declined to comment on any punishment that his players receive, though past history would indicate that Harris will be suspended for Saturdays game in Lexington, Kentucky.
Running back Trevor Etienne did not play in a season-opening victory over Clemson after an offseason arrest.
He did play this past Saturday against Tennessee Tech.
Without providing specifics, Smart has said that players are disciplined with suspensions and fines through the collective that provides name, image and likeness payments to the schools athletes.
The incidents that have been happening off the field are not something we condone, Smart said this summer before taking the stage at SEC Media Days in Dallas.
Its very unfortunate, disappointing, I guess is the best word.
Harris played six games in a backup and special teams role as a freshman.
He moved up the depth chart this season to share time at cornerback with Julian Humphrey on the first-string defense, being credited with four tackles in the first two games.
If Harris does not play against Kentucky, freshman Ellis Robinson likely would take on a larger role.
Giants receiver Malik Nabers practices and avoids the injury report for the Commanders game EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.
Malik Nabers practiced with the New York Giants on Friday, and the rookie receiver was not listed on the teams injury report for this weekends game with the Washington Commanders.
Nabers, the sixth-overall pick in the NFL draft, showed up on the injury report on Thursday after experiencing an issue with his knee.
The team said he was limited at practice.
Coach Brian Daboll was not concerned about the injury before practice Friday and said Nabers was going to play in the NFC East game at Washington.
Well see how he feels when he gets out here, but no concern.
Hell be ready to play, Daboll said before practice.
Nabers led New York with five catches for 66 yards in a 28-6 loss to Minnesota in the season opener.
Wide receiver Darius Slayton also practiced fully and was removed from the NFL concussion protocol after being examined by an independent neurological consultant.
He probably will be a game-time decision on Sunday.
The Giants said cornerback Nick McCloud (knee), rookie inside linebacker Darius Muasau (knee) and wide receiver/return specialist Gunner Olszewski will not play in the game against Washington.
Whitehead becomes 1st CHL player to verbally commit to playing NCAA hockey Braxton Whitehead said Friday he has verbally committed to Arizona State, making him the first member of a Canadian Hockey League team to attempt to play the sport at the Division I US college level since a lawsuit was filed challenging the NCAAs longstanding ban on players it deems to be professionals.
Whitehead posted on social media he plans to play for the Sun Devils beginning in the 2025-26 season.
An Arizona State spokesperson said the school could not comment on verbal commitments, citing NCAA rules.
A message left with the CHL was not immediately returned.
A class-action lawsuit filed Aug.
13 in US District Court in Buffalo, New York, could change the landscape for players from the CHLs Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
NCAA bylaws consider them professional leagues and bar players from there from the college ranks.
Online court records show the NCAA has not made any response to the lawsuit since it was filed.
CHL players receive a stipend of no more than $600 per month for living expenses, which is not considered as income for tax purposes.
College players receive scholarships and now can earn money through endorsements and other use of their name, image and likeness (NIL).
The implications of the lawsuit could be far-reaching.
If successful, the case could increase competition for college-age talent between North Americas two top producers of NHL draft-eligible players.
I think that everyone involved in our coaches association is aware of some of the transformational changes that are occurring in collegiate athletics, Forrest Karr, executive director of American Hockey Coaches Association and Minnesota-Duluth athletic director said last month.
And we are trying to be proactive and trying to learn what we can about those changes.
Karr was not immediately available for comment on Friday.
Duplantis sets pole vault meet record in Diamond League Final BRUSSELS Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis capped a beautiful season with a meet record in the Diamond League Final on Friday that was far from his world record.
Duplantis has broken the world record three times this year; the second time was when he won his second Olympic gold medal in Paris, and the most recent in a league meet in Poland on Aug.
25, clearing 6.26 meters.
But after he made 5.92 that nobody else could match in Brussels, he nailed 6.11 at his first attempt and stopped.
That was one centimeter more than his own Memorial Van Damme record set last year, and he said he was too tired to continue.
Afterwards, he said his 100-meter victory over 400 hurdles world record-holder Karsten Warholm in Zurich last week took more out of him than expected.
My legs felt terrible tonight and Im just really tired, Duplantis said.
Its been a crazy couple of weeks: The race against Karsten and then I had to jump the day after.
That took a lot more from my body that I expected.
With 6.11 I got a good result, but the world record wasnt meant to be.
Its not easy to do better each time.
Everything needs to come together.
I had some good jumps tonight and Im really happy about that.
Now its time to celebrate my beautiful season.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the mens 1,500 meters in a photo finish.
The Norwegian star timed 3:30.07 after a typical last-lap surge.
Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya was barely second in 3:30.93, and just nosed Cole Hocker, the surprising Olympic champion from the US, by 0.01.
Hockers fellow American, Yared Nuguse, who won the league race in Zurich last week, was sixth, less than two seconds behind Ingebrigtsen.
Tiger Woods has another surgery on lower back to relieve pinched nerves Tiger Woods had yet another surgery on his lower back on Friday morning.
This one he hopes will relieve some of the spasms he experienced this year.
It was the sixth surgery on his lower back in the last 10 years.
In a brief statement on social media, Woods described it as a microdecompression surgery of the lumbar spine for nerve impingement on the lower back.
That also is referred to as a microdiscectomy, and the recovery time can be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks.
Woods was not scheduled to play again until the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Dec.
5-8, and the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, on Dec.
21-22 in Orlando, Florida.
The surgery went smoothly, and Im hopeful this will help alleviate the back spasms and pain I was experiencing throughout most of the 2024 season, Woods said.
Woods played only five tournaments this year the four majors and the Genesis Invitational at Riviera in February, where he is the tournament host.
He lasted only 24 holes at Riviera because of illness.
Buffalo Bills starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard out indefinitely with pectoral injury ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
Buffalo Bills starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard is out indefinitely after hurting a pectoral muscle, with coach Sean McDermott on Friday not ruling out placing the starter on the short-term injured reserve list.
McDermott said the team is still having internal discussions on whether to place Bernard on IR, and making him eligible to return after missing a minimum four games.
Bernard didnt return after being hurt while making a tackle in the first quarter a 31-10 win over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night.
His injury leaves Buffalo without its two starting linebackers, with Matt Milano out until at least December with a torn left biceps.
The Bills are already thin in experience at linebacker.
Second-year player Dorian Williams is starting in place of Milano, while third-year player Baylon Spector stepped in to replace Bernard.
The primary backups are veteran free-agent addition Nicholas Morrow and undrafted rookie free agent Joe Andreessen, with no linebackers currently on the teams practice squad.
McDermott also provided an update on nickel cornerback Taron Johnson, saying the starter is listed week to week and not expected to be placed on short-term IR.
Johnson is sidelined after hurting his right forearm in Buffalos season-opening 34-28 win against Arizona on Sunday..
