Former top in-state quarterback prospect Daniel Kaelin is leaving Nebraska after one season.

Kaelin announced his intent to transfer Tuesday, dealing a blow to the Huskers long-term QB depth behind Dylan Raiola.

The Bellevue West graduate didnt appear in a game this year now his first official college snap will come in a different uniform.

Kaelins departure comes within a position group that in theory could have returned its top four members that also includes Raiola, Heinrich Haarberg and Jalyn Gramstad.

Kaelin was third on the depth chart all season, though the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder was the only one within the quartet not to see game action.

All of us are really talented, Kaelin said in early August.

We all want to be great and we approach everything we do like that.

NU coach Matt Rhule targeted Kaelin early upon his hire in December 2022, though the Elite 11 quarterback became a fallback option as the Huskers pursued Raiola, a five-star legacy recruit who showed interest.

As Raiola considered, Kaelin pledged to Missouri the following March.

When Raiola committed to Georgia that May, Kaelin flipped to the Huskers while citing a pro-oriented offense that fit his play style.

Kaelin stuck with Big Red even as Raiola had a late change of heart two days before the early signing period a year ago.

He operated this season behind Raiola who started every contest and Haarberg, an eight-game starter in 2023 who brought a changeup element with his speed across 11 games.

Rhule often made sure to include Kaelin in quarterback questions about Raiola and Haarberg.

He said late in training camp that the Huskers have three guys that we feel like can lead us to win.

Kaelins effusive personality the it factor, Rhule has called it quickly made him a leader among NUs 2024 class and paired well with a strong arm and quick mind.

Kaelin will show it off elsewhere with Raiola set up to be entrenched in Lincoln for the foreseeable future.

Ive said it before, Ill say it again: Therell be a day youll look up, Ill bet you those two freshmen are both playing in the National Football League, Rhule said in August.

Theyre both pro players.

Five Huskers previously announced their intent to transfer Monday as the team begins to trim its roster from 150-plus to next seasons mandated limit of 105..
