17.
They will look to defend that spot and move up in the rankings Saturday afternoon when the Tigers head to Columbia for a date with the South Carolina Gamecocks, who enter the match-up at 2-0 following wins over Kentucky and Old Dominion but are unranked.
The game will feature an interesting battle of weaknesses as South Carolina struggles mightily to move the ball on offense.
At the same time, LSU can be exploited on defense, specifically through the air, allowing a 66-percent success rate in the passing game.
That is abysmal for a team for a team with the stature of the Tigers.
Their quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, makes up for it, though.
Showing flashes of an NFL-worthy prospect, he has been spectacular thus far in the 2024 season, hurling eight touchdowns to one interception.
How he holds up against a strong Gamecock defense, with an above-average pass rush, could determine the outcome of Saturday's game.
Ultimately, it will be South Carolina's struggles offensively and their inability to match score for score with LSU that should prove the difference as the away team rolls into a raucous Columbia, South Carolina, and strengthens its argument for a higher ranking with a win over the home team.
Prediction: LSU defeats South Carolina, 27-14.
