GCC hoops sweeps Waynesburg; Hannon matches career high; Lewis leads Thiel in loss

GROVE CITY - Four Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night to help lift the Wolverines to a 64-56 home win over Waynesburg University in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at the Grove City College Arena.

Senior guards Jonah Bock and Chase Yarberough both fired in 14 points for Grove City (3-2, 1-0) while sophomore guard Drew Collins added a career-high 12 points as he went 4-for-4 on three-point attempts.

Junior forward Mike Christenson added 11 points, along with a team-leading six rebounds.

Grove City surged ahead midway through the second half with a 20-6 run that featured six three-point goals.

Bock cut Waynesburg's lead to 42-39 with a three-pointer while Christenson's layup pulled the Wolverines to within 42-41.

Bock tied the game at 44 with another three-pointer.

Yarberough hit a pair of threes while Bock and Collins had successive three-pointers that put Grove City up 56-47.

Grove City trailed 28-23 at halftime but shot 52 percent (12 of 23) from the field in the second half.

The Wolverines hit 7 of 14 three-point attempts over the final 20 minutes.

Overall, Grove City shot 21 of 54 (39 percent) for the game.

The Wolverines limited Waynesburg to a 17-of-53 (32 percent) shooting performance.

Waynesburg outrebounded the Wolverines, 42-33.

Sophomore guard Caleb Haller collected five rebounds for Grove City in his first collegiate start.

Grove City committed 14 turnovers while Waynesburg had 19 turnovers.

Yarberough recorded three assists.

GREENVILLE, Pa.

- The Thiel College men's basketball team ended Wednesday nights chippy and physical home Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) duel with Allegheny on a 5-0 run in the final 52 seconds to capture a 67-62 win on Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.

The Tomcats rise to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in PAC play while the Gators fall to 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

Coming out of a Thiel timeout tied at 62 with 1 minute left in the game, Gabriel Gonzalez hit a well-contested turnaround, fadeaway jay from the left block to put the Tomcats ahead 64-62 with 52 seconds remaining.

Thiel forced an Allegheny over-and-back violation on the following possession to get the ball back with 34 seconds left.

Mike Brown connected through contact on a driving layup with 17 seconds left to push Thiel's leads to 66-62.

A Gonzalez free throw with 4 seconds left sealed the 67-62 final.

Gonzalez posted a game and season-best 18 points on 5-of-9 and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe.

He added five rebounds to go with a team-leading two steals and one blocked shot.

Brown added 13 points on 6-of-16 and pulled down a pair of boards.

The junior has posted double-figure point totals in all five of Thiel's games so far this season.

Ellerbee finished with 6 points and pulled down a pair of rebounds.

The Blue and Gold used a 14-5 run to turn a 38-34 second-half deficit at the 15:28 mark into a 48-43 lead with 10:29 left to play.

The run was capped off with an Anthony Henderson II left-wing 3-pointer that forced an Allegheny timeout.

The freshman totaled 5 points on the night to go with two rebounds and one blocked shot.

The visitors responded with a 5-0 spurt to tie things at 48 with 9:24 remaining.

Both sides went back and forth as the Gators clung to a 60-59 edge with 3:59 remaining.

Rob Thomas canned a right-wing corner 3-ball on a busted play to give Thiel a 2-point edge (62-60).

Allegheny tied things up on the following possession with 2:13 left.

Thomas pitched in 7 points, posted a team-best-tying two blocks and grabbed three rebounds.

John Morgan, Das Sanders and Khamari Accursio-Harris each added two blocks as well.

Accursio-Harris finished with 8 points and a team-leading seven rebounds while Morgan grabbed five boards.

(Greenville High) pitched in a career-best 7 points on 3-of-4 in the win.

The Tomcats trailed 28-26 at the break as neither side was able to find a rhythm or flow offensively due to defensive pressure and physicality on both ends of the court.

The home side forced 11 turnovers and blocked four shots in teh firts 20 minutes.

Offensively, Thiel stayed in the opening half thanks to going 10-of-13 at the free-throw line.

The Blue and Gold shot 66.7% (18 for 27) from the field and 50% (3-for-6) from beyond the arc in the second half.

For the game, Thiel made baskets at a 45.6% (26-for-57) clip and held the Gators to just 38.6% (22-for-57) shooting.

Thiel returns to action Saturday when they host PAC foe Saint Vincent for Hall of Fame Weekend at 3 p.m.

GREENVILLE - Thiel dropped its second President' Athletic Conference (PAC) against the Allegheny Gators 73-56 this evening.

The Tomcats led the first quarter 19-13, holding the Gators only 5-19 in field goals.

Thiel shot 3-6 from the 3-point line and 8-17 in the field.

Thiel kept the lead going into the half with a score of 40-34, going 2-2 in free throws, and 3-5 from the 3-point line.

The Tomcats had their largest lead of the game (29-19) at the 5:50 minute of the 2nd quarter.

(Greenville High) led the team with 13 points.

She added three assists, two rebounds, and one steal to her night.

Lewis went 3-5 from the 3-point line, and 2-4 in free throws.

Off the bench, Bria Ringloff and Giovanna Castro helped lead the Tomcat offense.

Ringloff put up 12 points, one block, and one steal.

She went 5-10 from the field and had four rebounds.

Castro had 8 points and went 2-3 from the 3-point line.

After the first half, the Gators came out hot outscoring the Tomcats 17-8 in the third quarter and 22-8 in the fourth.

Allegheny was led by Bella Antonacci who put up 24 points.

She went 2-2 from the line, 8-14 from the field, and made six 3-point shots.

Analyse Rios (13), Sarah Santicola (11), and Emily Lauer (10) all had 10+ point games to help the Gators to victory.

Ava Kobus led the team in rebounds with eight, while also getting five points and two assists.

The Tomcats are back in action Saturday when they host Saint Vincent at 1 p.m.

GROVE CITY - Junior guard Reese Hasley fired in a career-high 21 points while senior forward (Grove City High) matched a career best with 19 points Wednesday night as the Grove City College women's basketball team pulled out a 71-60 victory over visiting Waynesburg University (4-1, 0-1) in the Presidents' Athletic Conference lidlifter at the Grove City College Arena.

Hasley hit 8 of 10 shots from the field, including both of her three-point attempts.

Hannon hit three consecutive three-pointers in the final two minutes of the first half to give Grove City a 32-28 lead.

Still, Grove City (2-2, 1-0) needed an 11-0 run down the stretch to secure the win.

Grove City led 58-57 with 3:34 left but junior forward Meredith Sherrerd sparked the closing rally with a pair of jumpers.

Hasley scored on a fast break while senior guard Mara Polczynski and sophomore guard Bethany Thompson both hit two free throws.

Hasley sewed up the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds.

Sherrerd finished with her first collegiate double-double as she posted 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

She helped Grove City attain a 47-45 edge on the glass.

Polczynski collected six rebounds and Hasley had five rebounds.

Grove City shot 26 of 71 (37 percent) for the game.

The Wolverines converted 7 of 14 shots in the fourth quarter.

Waynesburg went 5 of 18 (28 percent) on field goal attempts in the fourth quarter.

Overall, the Yellow Jackets shot 35 percent (23 of 65) from the floor.

Waynesburg turned over the ball 22 times while Grove City committed 15 turnovers.

Thompson recorded five assists and Hasley had four assists for the Wolverines.

Senior guard Jaden Davinsizer assisted three field goals.

She also had two steals.

The game featured seven ties, including a 17-17 deadlock after one quarter.

Grove City led 49-46 after 30 minutes.

Kara McFadden led Waynesburg with 21 points.

Grove City will host conference foe Franciscan at 1 p.m.

Saturday.
