Armijo High School men’s soccer team beats Rodriguez 3-1 in MEL opener

FAIRFIELD — Armijo High School’s men’s soccer team scored on a penalty kick and two successful shots on goal in a 3-1 win at Brownlee Field in their Monticello Empire League opener against Rodriguez on Tuesday night. Added.

Senior captain Diego Torres put a penalty kick into the net five minutes into the match. Junior Santiago Alvarez gave Armijo his 2–0 lead at half-time as he scored a goal after ten minutes.

Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick in the second half to take the lead. But Armijo’s senior, Abraham Perez Asensio, came back with another goal for the Royals and a final 3-1 edge.

“I’m so proud of tonight’s players and what they brought to the field,” Armijo head coach Megan Flores said in an email. “They really stepped up their play and learned a lot from every preseason game.”

Armijo improved to 4-7 overall. Rodriguez is currently 2-4.

Rodriguez did not provide individual stats for the match.

Armijo’s junior national team won 2-0. Valentin Vera scored a 1-1 goal in the second half. Ricardo Brambilla scrambled for his ball loosely and scored the second goal.

Jeremiah Tam and Mauricio Galindo were key defensive plays for Armijo’s junior national team. Forward Luis García Carreón also had some chances to score. Isaac Aguirre helped score a goal for the fouled Brambilla.

Personal statistics for Rodriguez JV were not available.
