(Reuters) – The 2024 Copa America will be played in the United States by the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL federations announced on Friday as part of a new strategic partnership that includes a co-organized club tournament.

Six invited teams from the CONCACAF (North, Central America and Caribbean) region will also participate in next year’s Copa America, organized by the South American Federation (CONMEBOL).

Six CONCACAF teams also participated in South America’s most important national team tournament, which was held in the United States for the second time after the 2016 Special Commemorative Tournament.

In the women’s division, CONCACAF invites four South American national teams to the 2024 W Gold Cup. The tournament will be held in the United States for the first time this year.

CONMEBOL and CONCACAF have also announced plans for a club tournament to take place in 2024. Two teams from each region will participate, with four qualifying teams from the existing regional tournaments Copa Libertadores and the CONCACAF Champions League.

“CONMEBOL and CONCACAF are bound by a historical and emotional bond, but above all by the passion for football and sport that characterizes the entire Americas,” said CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez. said in a statement Friday.

“We hope that this passion will lead to more and better competitions so that football and its values ​​grow and strengthen across the hemisphere.”

CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani added: “This partnership will support the continued growth of men’s and women’s football in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL and will be truly mutually beneficial for both federations.”
