Now that the Milwaukee Brewers have claimed the World Series title over the Tampa Bay Rays, the focus in Major League Baseball shifts to the annual awards season. Houston Astros standout Yordan Alvarez is among the top contenders for one of the game's highest individual honors.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) has revealed Alvarez as a finalist for the 2026 American League Most Valuable Player award. At 29 years old, the slugger is vying for his first career MVP and the chance to become only the third player in Astros history to capture the award.
Alvarez put together a stellar campaign, posting a .316 batting average (179 hits in 567 at-bats) with 105 runs scored, 34 doubles, one triple, 42 home runs, 106 runs batted in, 109 walks, and a 1.033 OPS across 158 games. His offensive output was among the best in the league.
He paced the American League in several key categories, including batting average, OPS, slugging percentage (.601), on-base percentage (.432), total bases (341), walks (109), intentional walks (33), wRC+ (181), OPS+ (190), and extra-base hits (77). Additionally, he tied for second in home runs, ranked second in RBI and hits, fourth in doubles, and fourth in runs scored. Notably, Alvarez was the only major leaguer to finish the season with an OPS above 1.000.
By winning the American League and Major League batting titles, Alvarez became the third player in franchise history to earn a batting crown, joining first baseman Yuli Gurriel (2021) and second baseman Jose Altuve (2014, 2016-17). He also became just the third player since 1970 to win the AL batting title while hitting 40 or more home runs, alongside Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees (2025) and Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers (2012-13).
Alvarez set an Astros franchise record with 33 intentional walks, falling just three short of the all-time AL mark of 36 set by Judge in 2025. Throughout the season, he earned three AL Player of the Week honors and two AL Player of the Month awards. He was also selected to his fourth career All-Star Game, making his second start after being voted in by fans in 2024.
Should Alvarez win, he would join Jeff Bagwell (1994) and Jose Altuve (2017) as the only Astros to receive BBWAA MVP honors. The MLB Most Valuable Player awards will be announced on Thursday, November 12, at 6 p.m. Central Time, live on MLB Network.
Key Analysis
Alvarez's remarkable season places him in elite company, with his combination of power and plate discipline setting him apart. His league-leading stats underscore his value to the Astros, and his pursuit of the MVP adds another chapter to Houston's rich baseball history.
