Yaxel Lendeborg Stunned by Steve Kerr's Aggressive Demand as Warriors Rookie

The Golden State Warriors entered the 2024 NBA Draft with a clear objective: to acquire a player capable of making an immediate contribution. Holding the No. 11 pick, the Warriors had multiple options but ultimately chose Yaxel Lendeborg, the NCAA National Champion, believing he possessed the readiness to impact the NBA right away.

That selection opened the door for Lendeborg to potentially secure an immediate role, a key factor in the team's decision. ESPN's Anthony Slater noted that Lendeborg is viewed as an NBA-ready, plug-and-play frontcourt rotation option for a squad in dire need of instant production.

After two preseason games, the Warriors have gained valuable insights, particularly regarding how they need Lendeborg to perform. Head coach Steve Kerr has made it clear that he wants the rookie to be more aggressive. "We need him to be more aggressive," Kerr told the media.

Following Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Lendeborg admitted that the request caught him off guard. "Well, it's very shocking to hear it now," he said. "But I mean, I get the point. The two other guys are hurt. Jimmy was one of the main scorers on this team. So, going to have to try to fill in his role until he gets back. And I've been in positions where I've had to score the ball a lot, I guess, or an extra amount that I would like. I feel like I'll be able to step into that role for sure. Just got to continue to work at it, get the confidence to do that. But I mean, I feel like everything's going to be trending up the right way."

There is no doubt that this is a significant ask for Lendeborg, but he has the tools to become a high-end scorer for Golden State until the injured players return. He was dominant in college, and if he maintains that same mentality, he can be dominant early in his professional career. He is also surrounded by the best offensive player in NBA history, Stephen Curry. Once Lendeborg understands that being aggressive allows Curry to operate more freely, he will help the team immensely.

It will be a learning curve, but Lendeborg still seems in shock that he is expected to shoulder such a substantial role.
