Yankees Shake Up Front Office: Two Veteran Executives Out, Cashman and Boone Stay

In the wake of yet another MLB season that ended without a World Series title, the New York Yankees are restructuring their baseball operations department. Two seasoned executives, Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, are not expected to be part of general manager Brian Cashman's staff in 2027, according to sources. The decision signals a shift within the front office even as Cashman stays at the helm.

Both Minaya and Sabean arrived in the Bronx prior to the 2023 campaign, bringing a wealth of front-office experience to Cashman's team. Sabean previously served as general manager of the San Francisco Giants, while Minaya held the same position with the New York Mets and Montreal Expos.

Sabean spent nearly two decades leading the Giants' baseball operations and was at the helm for their championship seasons in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Before his tenure in San Francisco, he also worked for several years in the Yankees organization. Minaya, meanwhile, built a reputation for strong relationships across the sport, which were considered an asset in New York. He was reportedly involved in the club's pursuits of Juan Soto and Max Fried.

The Yankees' front-office directory currently lists Sabean as an executive advisor to the general manager and Minaya as a senior advisor in baseball operations. Their departures leave the organization without two former general managers who have been part of the baseball operations group since 2023.

Key Analysis

The changes come as the Yankees face mounting pressure to make meaningful adjustments after another postseason disappointment. New York was eliminated in the ALDS, extending a stretch in which the franchise has struggled to convert regular-season success into a championship. Cashman, however, agreed to a new contract and will continue in his role, and manager Aaron Boone is also returning. That means the organization is reshaping the group around its top baseball decision-maker rather than starting over at the top.

The decisions involving Minaya and Sabean are particularly notable because both were brought in as experienced voices to advise Cashman. Their exits mark the first major front-office moves of the offseason, and more changes could follow as the Yankees continue to work through the winter. For now, Cashman remains in charge of setting the organization's direction heading into 2027.
