Yankees' Season on the Brink: Max Fried Takes Mound for Game 3 Despite Impending Fatherhood

In their Wild Card series against the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees executed flawlessly, combining situational defense and error-free play with timely home runs to secure a 2-0 sweep. However, that same formula has eluded them in the ALDS versus the Tampa Bay Rays, leaving them one loss away from elimination as they head into Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.

New York's offense has been limited to two runs, both via solo homers off the bat of Ben Rice. The team has also committed nearly as many errors (four) as hits (five) over the two games.

With their season hanging in the balance, the Yankees are handing the ball to Max Fried, who is expecting his first child with his girlfriend at any moment. Fried, who made 20 starts this season and posted a 2.80 ERA despite dealing with two elbow issues, affirmed that he will pitch no matter what.

"I've got a really supportive family that understands that this is my job, and it's not going to affect what happens," Fried said.

The 10-year veteran already has one postseason start under his belt in 2026, a one-run, three-hit effort over the course of six innings in the series-clinching Game 2 win over Boston.

Fried is just one season removed from leading all of baseball in wins, posting a career-high 19 in 2025.
