Spencer Jones is positioned to become the New York Yankees' regular center fielder by 2027, with Trent Grisham likely to leave via free agency. Even so, the Yankees might seek to introduce competition or at least a platoon partner for Jones. Ideally, that outfielder would be a right-handed batter with strong defensive skills.
Earlier in the offseason, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Yankees had previously shown interest in Washington Nationals center fielder Jacob Young. However, the front office now needs to shift to an alternative plan.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, Young and the Nationals reached an agreement on a four-year, $23 million contract extension that includes an $8 million option for a fifth season. Young is therefore no longer available to the Yankees after signing the extension on Friday.
The 27-year-old has been Washington's primary center fielder for the past three seasons. In 2026, he batted .252/.318/.390 with 10 home runs, 50 RBIs, and a .707 OPS over 140 games. Young provides good speed both on the basepaths and in the outfield, averaging 29 stolen bases per year across his first four seasons. Additionally, he has accumulated 46 outs above average in recent years, delivering exceptional defense.
With Young off the market, the Yankees will need to consider other candidates for a fourth outfielder. Free agent Myles Straw is one possibility. New York could also turn to Jasson Dominguez, but he has not improved defensively and recorded a .635 OPS in 57 games.
Key Analysis
The Yankees' offseason strategy has been altered by Young's extension, removing a potential upgrade from their outfield depth chart. While Jones appears to be the long-term solution in center, the team may now prioritize adding a right-handed bat with defensive versatility through free agency or trade. Internal options like Dominguez carry question marks, making Straw a more reliable short-term fix. The front office's ability to adapt will be crucial as they aim to construct a competitive roster for 2027.
