Yankees Offseason: Brandon Lowe Emerges as Potential Replacement for Jazz Chisholm Jr.

The New York Yankees are bracing for a series of offseason choices, with the future of second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. standing out as a major point of intrigue. Chisholm is set to test free agency, leaving open the possibility of a return to the Bronx or a move to a new club.

Chisholm's playoff involvement was minimal, a situation that might have bred dissatisfaction. Despite that, the infielder has expressed a desire to remain with the Yankees.

In 2025, Chisholm earned his second All-Star nod but experienced a decline at the plate, and his postseason performance over four games was lackluster both offensively and defensively. Manager Aaron Boone kept him out of the starting lineup for two playoff contests, including the season-ending defeat on Wednesday. When Chisholm pinch-hit in the seventh inning and fouled out to first base, Yankee Stadium fans responded with boos.

Even so, Chisholm would prefer to extend his tenure in New York rather than depart via free agency, as MLB Trade Rumors' Connor Byrne noted.

During his time with the Miami Marlins, Chisholm reportedly drew the attention of Yankees icon Derek Jeter, who felt compelled to discuss focus with him. Jeter was serving as an owner in Miami, with Don Mattingly managing the club. According to NJ.com's Bob Klapisch, these two respected Yankees figures, who embodied the franchise's tradition and played the game the right way, met with Chisholm multiple times to urge him to get his mind right.

The offseason outlook remains uncertain. Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley forecasts that New York will instead sign Brandon Lowe, a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove finalist, rather than re-signing Chisholm.

Perhaps the Pittsburgh Pirates' 82 wins in 2025—their highest total since 2018—will encourage them to open their wallets, but Lowe's next contract could demand both a hefty annual salary and a lengthy commitment. That combination might exceed what Pittsburgh's front office is willing to accept, which would be welcome news for a big-market spender with questions at second base.

Buckley's prediction: Lowe lands with the Yankees.

Lowe profiles as a viable replacement due to his greater consistency at the plate compared to Chisholm. He also tends to be more reserved when unhappy, which could make him a seamless fit in the clubhouse. Lowe has just completed the final year of a $24 million contract and is a dependable defender who has been a Gold Glove finalist. Signing him could yield significant benefits for New York this offseason.
