The New York Yankees had a defensive performance to forget in Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, committing four errors in a 5-2 loss on Monday, Oct. 5 at Tropicana Field.
The miscues began early, with three errors in the first inning alone. Third baseman Ryan McMahon misplayed a Yandy Díaz grounder that bounced, marking the first error. Two batters later, Junior Caminero hit a dribbler that resulted in a groundout, but Jazz Chisholm Jr. overthrew Luis García Jr. at first base for the second error. Later in the inning, catcher Austin Wells was charged with catcher interference when Liam Hicks' bat grazed his mitt, adding a third error.
According to the New York Post, it was the first time in franchise history that the Yankees committed three errors in a single postseason inning.
The defensive woes continued in the bottom of the fifth when left fielder George Lombard Jr. overthrew García Jr. at first base after fielding a Jonny DeLuca single, notching the fourth error. Earlier in the inning, Lombard Jr. was involved in a play that was ruled a fielder's choice, narrowly avoiding a fifth error.
Ben Rice provided the offense for New York, hitting two solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings. However, the Rays' pitching held the Yankees in check otherwise.
With the loss, the Yankees now trail the series 2-0 and are on the brink of playoff elimination.
