Michigans football program added another tight end to its 2027 recruiting class on Sunday, picking up a commitment from American Fork (Utah) three-star Christian Hanshaw.
Heres what his commitment means for the Wolverines: -- Michigan went all-in for its annual Victors Weekend, aiming to strengthen relationships with its current commits while making a strong impression on the uncommitted prospects in town for official visits.
The programs biggest recruiting weekend has produced positive results in recent years, and Hanshaws commitment is an encouraging early return from this years event.
-- While Hanshaw publicly announced his commitment Sunday, the Wolverines have been at the top of his list for a while.
This was his third trip to Ann Arbor, and the multi-day visit was enough for him to shut down his recruitment.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder chose Michigan over 20 other reported offers, including Oregon, BYU, Florida, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
Ive actually known it was going to be Michigan for a little bit now, Hanshaw told Rivals.
They have everything you could want to be successful, and it felt like all they were missing was an elite coaching staff.
They definitely have that now.
Ive known so many of these coaches for a long time, and now when you add this staff to everything else Michigan has going for it, it made it a slam dunk for me.
-- Hanshaw also was a top target for Utah when head coach Kyle Whittingham and many of his new Michigan assistants were with the Utes.
Utah remained in contention even after the staff changes, but the relationships with the Michigan coaches played a large role in his decision.
Hanshaws father played with new Michigan tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham at BYU.
Ive known him before I even thought about playing college football, he said.
I love that guy so much.
Hes the kind of coach I can see spending the next five years with.
Hes not just a great coach but a great person as well.
He developed a ton of tight ends at Utah and I love the plan he has in place for me.
I fit their style of tight end; I can block and catch passes.
Im not just a glorified big receiver.
I enjoy blocking, and being a well-rounded tight end is something I really take pride in.
-- According to the 247Sports composite, Hanshaw is ranked as the No.
516 overall player and No.
28 tight end nationally.
While he is technically a class of 2027 recruit, he plans to take a two-year mission trip through his church after high school and wont enroll at Michigan until 2029.
-- Hanshaw becomes Michigans 18th commitment this cycle and second tight end, joining four-star Colt Lumpris.
The Wolverines class now ranks 10th nationally, with several other top targets set to announce in the coming weeks.
-- As a junior, Hanshaw had 27 catches for 356 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games.
While Lumpris is considered more of a receiving threat, Hanshaws highlight tape includes ample snaps of him blocking as an in-line tight end.
