As Week 7 of the high school football season approaches, several intriguing matchups are on the docket. Here's a breakdown of the top games, along with predictions for each.
Mater Dei (4-2) at JSerra (4-2)
This game carries significant weight for both teams, but for different reasons. Mater Dei is desperate to snap a two-game losing streak and avoid starting Trinity League play 0-2. The Monarchs' defense has been stellar week in and week out, but the offense has managed only three touchdowns in the last three games—a pace that won't cut it in the Trinity League. The last two losses came against Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita, so a matchup with JSerra might appear more winnable on paper. However, that's precisely where the pressure mounts, adding intrigue to this contest.
For JSerra, after a 40-14 drubbing by St. John Bosco last week, head coach Hardy Nickerson seems intent on proving that his program is no longer a pushover in the league. This game presents the perfect opportunity to send that message. There's no pressure on JSerra to win, but the possibility of victory is higher than ever given Mater Dei's recent struggles. The pick: JSerra.
Chaminade (5-1) at Bishop Amat (5-1)
Chaminade nearly upset Notre Dame Sherman Oaks last week without starting quarterback Jeremy Mellalieu, who is doubtful for this crucial Mission League showdown due to a strained ligament in his throwing hand. Bishop Amat, meanwhile, escaped Gardena Serra last week and may have benefited from a reality check. Head coach Kory Minor likely reminded his team that there are no easy wins in league play. After learning they aren't invincible, the Lancers should be ready at home. The pick: Bishop Amat.
Inglewood (6-1) at Palos Verdes (6-0)
This game will likely decide the Bay League title. Inglewood has quietly compiled a strong season, with its only loss coming to Westlake High in Texas. Now, the Sentinels face their toughest test against undefeated Palos Verdes, led by one of California's top quarterbacks, Ryan Rakowski. While Inglewood may have the edge in talent and athleticism, Palos Verdes boasts a winning pedigree. Give me coach Guy Gardner and the Sea Kings at home in an afternoon game overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The pick: Palos Verdes.
Tustin (4-2) at Corona del Mar (6-0)
Despite Corona del Mar being the undefeated home team, the pressure seems to be on Tustin. The Tillers have been a program on the rise for the past three or four years, loaded with talent, but have yet to win the big game. Tustin fell short against Crean Lutheran, the favorite to win the Bravo League, but this matchup with CdM is a chance to stay in the league title conversation. A loss would likely eliminate them from contention. Corona del Mar is more consistent, as college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein would say, like "a Few Good Men on a rainy Sunday." The Sea Kings are physical, fundamental, and feature a balanced offensive attack—a tough combination to beat. The pick: Corona del Mar.
Norco (5-1) at Chaparral (3-3)
This one could be a shootout—first to 60 wins. Norco averages 450 yards and 40 points per game. Chaparral scored 52 points in quarterback Dane Weber's first game back from injury. The Pumas have kept their season afloat while Weber was out, and now that he's returned, they mean business. Norco quarterback Julian Medina has thrown for over 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns with just two interceptions, but Chaparral may outscore the Cougars in this one. The pick: Chaparral.
