Week 10 Showdowns: Three Blue-Blood Programs on the Brink of CFP Elimination

With the 2026 college football regular season entering its final month, the selection committee's first rankings have drawn a clear line between contenders and pretenders. As Week 10 approaches, several marquee programs find themselves staring down potential elimination scenarios that could drastically alter the national landscape.

The release of the initial College Football Playoff rankings has set the stage for a potentially seismic Saturday, with bubble teams facing make-or-break games. Here's a closer look at three storied programs on the verge of elimination.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This weekend: Hosts No. 1 Miami.

The situation: Despite holding the No. 4 spot in the AP poll, the one-loss Irish received a stark wake-up call from the committee, which slotted them at No. 11. As an independent, Notre Dame cannot secure a conference title auto-bid or a first-round bye, leaving essentially no margin for error.

If they win: The Irish would solidify their standing in the top dozen and secure what would arguably be the nation's most impressive victory by toppling the top-ranked team. The odds improve further with news that Miami's top wideout, Malachi Toney, will be sidelined with a new ankle injury.

If they lose: Their playoff hopes would be all but dashed. A second loss—combined with a previous defeat to ranked BYU and a schedule lacking in challenges—would leave no realistic path to climb back into the committee's good graces.

Ohio State Buckeyes

This weekend: Hosts No. 23 Oregon.

The situation: The preseason No. 1 team tumbled to No. 12 in the committee's first rankings following a loss at USC amid an injury-forced quarterback change. That places the Buckeyes as the projected first team out, with G6 representative Boise State currently occupying the 12th seed.

If they win: A victory over the Ducks—who have resurged late in the season and earned a spot in the selectors' initial poll—would provide an immediate bounce-back. A quality win would boost Ohio State's chances of making the final dozen to approximately 80 percent.

If they lose: Those playoff odds would plummet to about 35 percent. A third loss in early November is historically damaging for any at-large candidate, especially for a team already outside the projected bracket.

LSU Tigers

This weekend: Hosts No. 5 Alabama.

The situation: The committee does not view the Tigers as a playoff team, placing them at No. 14 in the initial rankings. Clearly, the selectors are unimpressed by LSU's resume, including an 0-2 mark against CFP-ranked opponents (Ole Miss and Kentucky).

If they win: Given the committee's high regard for Alabama, a victory would immediately bolster LSU's case for a top-12 spot, especially with their remaining schedule ranking as the third-toughest in the nation.

If they lose: It's not out of the question for a three-loss SEC team to make the field, and the selectors would likely view LSU's losses as high-quality. However, any lingering hope would hinge on winning out against Texas, Tennessee, and Arkansas without further missteps.
