Sep 6, 2025; Seattle, Washington, USA; Washington Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch talks with quarterback Demond Williams Jr.
(2) during a first quarter timeout against the UC Davis Aggies at Husky Stadium.
The Washington Huskies are set to enter the 2026 season with College Football Playoff aspirations.
But those hopes were almost dashed before they could even begin when star quarterback Demond Williams Jr.
shockingly threw his name into the transfer portal just days after signing a new contract with the school.
Ultimately, Williams remained with the Huskies after the program filed suit over a breach of contract.
Since that point, both Williams and head coach Jedd Fisch have played it coy when speaking about the situation, with Williams saying only that, definitely being 19, you get good advice, and you get really bad advice at times.
Were all human.
We all make mistakes, he added.
And at the end of the day, Im super blessed to be here with my brothers and my coaches and just at the University of Washington.
Im just so happy to be here and so blessed.
Now, Fisch is opening up and giving the public a bit more insight into what exactly happened with the whole situation.
Jedd Fisch Says Unnamed School Offered To Double Demond Williams NIL Pay Fisch recently appeared on The Triple Option podcast with Urban Meyer, Mark Ingram, and Rob Stone to discuss a number of topics.
Among those topics was Williams, and specifically what exactly happened in the days surrounding his decision to enter the transfer portal and ultimately to return to the Huskies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PruYuSCbZis We all came back for our first team meeting, and then when the team meeting ended, he called me and said, Coach, I think I need to go into the portal,' Fisch said.
And I was like, What are you talking about, man? What happened was: a program told him that theyd pay him an extra $2 million if he goes in the portal.
The kids 19 years old and were paying him a lot, but if you add another $2 million onto anything...he was forced to put something out there.
Fisch didnt state which school made the offer to Williams, although LSU and Lane Kiffin were heavily connected to the star quarterback at the time.
Ultimately, contract law played a large role in keeping Williams in Seattle.
We spent about 24-36 hours going back and forth and talking about, This is the right place for you, and you have a contract, and contracts mean something,' Fisch added.
In the end, he came back two days later.
We didnt change anything; we didnt give him any more money or anything like that, but what we did do is we talked about what a great opportunity it is to be a three-year player in the same program, and we have a chance to do something super special.
Will that sit well with teammates? Only time will tell.
But theres no questioning Williams talent, and the Huskies are a far more dangerous team with him at quarterback.
