Teams around the NBA always find ways to get creative, which is why it's absolutely crazy to see the moves made over the past few years.
Whether that's through contracts, trades, or anything else, teams are never capped in making moves because of all the ways they can get creative.
One way for the Golden State Warriors to do that would be doing something that we've hardly ever seen before, especially for a player of his caliber.
According to the latest, the Warriors got very creative in the deal for Kristaps Porzingis, and it's actually possible that they could waive him and get him back at a much lower price.
The Warriors can waive Porzingis before this July 7, 2026 and only pay him $3 million in salary for the upcoming season.
If the Warriors keep him this season, they can waive him before July 7, 2027 and only guarantee him the same amount for 2027-28.
Per the CBA, because Porzingis also has a player option in the second year, the Warriors must match the exact language in the non-guarantee to the terms from the previous season.
The partial guarantees give the Warriors extra payroll flexibility if they wanted to, say, make a significant change to their roster, Fred Katz of The Athletic reported.
Doing this would be a big-time surprise, though again, in the NBA, nothing can be counted out.
With reports indicating that the Warriors are interested in signing LeBron James, every dollar could be the difference in this scenario.
Having payroll flexibility is always important, and it sounds like that's something the Warriors were looking for when they decided to give Porzingis this type of contract.
