Utah Mammoth Edge Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 Behind Second-Period Surge

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Mammoth secured a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, powered by a dominant second period in which Dylan Guenther and Mikhail Sergachev each contributed a goal and an assist.

Daniil But, Vincent Trocheck, and MacKenzie Weegar also found the back of the net for Utah, while goaltender Karel Vejmelka turned aside 22 shots to earn the win.

For Toronto, Auston Matthews, Jack Roslovic, John Tavares, and Gavin McKenna scored, and Anthony Stolarz made 23 saves in a losing effort.

The Maple Leafs managed to cut a three-goal deficit down to one in the third period. With Toronto trailing 5-2, Tavares converted a power-play goal at 7:12 of the third. McKenna brought the Leafs within one nearly four minutes later, snapping a shot in from the circle.

Vejmelka came up with crucial saves during a final-minute penalty kill to prevent Toronto from forcing overtime.

Utah opened the scoring with 5:05 left in the first period when But flicked the puck around a defender and snapped it over Stolarz. Trocheck doubled the lead one minute into the second, redirecting a Logan Cooley pass from the opposite post into the net with a close-range wrist shot. Sergachev's short-handed goal extended the Mammoth advantage to 3-0 three minutes later.

Toronto finally got on the board with Matthews' power-play goal at 5:16 of the second. However, cutting into the lead proved difficult for the Leafs, as Utah answered each Toronto goal in the second period. Guenther restored a three-goal cushion with a long-distance snap shot with 5:43 remaining in the second. Roslovic again reduced the deficit to two on a one-timer between Vejmelka's legs with 3:31 left in the period. Weegar countered with Utah's fourth goal of the period with 40 seconds remaining.

Key Analysis

The Mammoth's ability to respond immediately after each Toronto goal in the second period proved decisive, maintaining a comfortable lead despite the Leafs' late push. Utah's special teams also played a key role, with Sergachev's short-handed goal and a critical penalty kill in the final minute. Toronto's comeback attempt fell short, as Vejmelka's 22 saves ensured the Mammoth held on for the win.
