Utah Mammoth Edge Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in High-Scoring Affair

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Mammoth held off a late surge from the Pittsburgh Penguins to claim a 5-4 victory on Monday night, with Clayton Keller, Kevin Stenlund, Nate Schmidt, and Nick Schmaltz each contributing a goal and an assist.

Kailer Yamamoto also found the net for Utah, while goaltender Sebastian Cossa made 15 saves. For Pittsburgh, Erik Karlsson, Richard Rakell, Egor Chinakhov, and Declan Carlile each scored, with Bryan Rust assisting on two goals. Arturs Silovs stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Karlsson opened the scoring with a deflected power-play goal just 71 seconds into the game. Keller equalized with a backhand at 6:00 of the first period, his third goal in as many games, after Lawson Crouse won the puck near the boards and redirected it around Karlsson's leg to Keller between the circles.

Stenlund gave the Mammoth their first lead with 9:50 remaining in the first, tapping in from close range. Rakell tied it on another power-play goal at 7:01 of the second, flicking a wrist shot near the left post.

Utah regained the lead with two late goals in the second. Schmidt blasted a slapshot from near the blue line with 8:16 to go, and Yamamoto tipped in from the low slot with 5:20 left. Schmaltz's power-play goal at 1:36 of the third made it 5-2, as he threaded a backhand around Silovs' left leg on a second effort after the goalie denied his initial shot.

The Penguins cut the deficit to one with late third-period goals from Chinakhov (2:55) and Carlile (5:05), but couldn't complete the comeback.
