UCSB Soccer's Tim Vom Steeg Eyes Another Historic Chapter as Gauchos Enter Golden Season

UC Santa Barbara is gearing up for a landmark 50th season of men's soccer, with Harder Stadium set to host a series of commemorations, including the 20th anniversary of the program's improbable run to the 2006 NCAA title. The venue itself will also mark its 60th year, having first opened its doors for a football game on Nov. 12, 1966.

Tim Vom Steeg, who was born just three weeks before the stadium's debut, has been the architect of its transformation into a premier college soccer destination, hosting College Cups in 2010 and 2018. Since taking over as head coach in 1999, he has amassed a program-record 324-152-76 record, earning National Coach of the Year honors in 2004 and 2006.

As he approaches his 60th birthday, Vom Steeg is focused on the future, insisting, "We're the best we've ever looked." This confidence stems from a squad that returns three of its top four scorers and the core of a defense that secured the Big West regular-season title last year. The league's coaches have already tabbed UCSB as the preseason favorite.

Key Additions

The Gauchos have been active in the transfer portal, a relatively new frontier for college soccer. Vom Steeg highlighted the arrival of Sacramento State transfer Donovan Sessoms, a senior striker who previously torched UCSB with a hat trick. Sessoms, a former MLS SuperDraft pick, chose the Gauchos over Virginia after extensive recruitment. "He became our top priority, our number one, our everything," Vom Steeg said.

Defensively, the team adds Viggo Gustavsson from Grand Canyon, a 6-3 junior who impressed in the WAC tournament. He joins returning standout Calle Mollerberg, the conference's defensive player of the year, and Andrew Kamienski, though Kamienski will sit out the opener due to suspension. The back line is further strengthened by the return of Peleg Brown and the addition of Italian right back Simone Ferrieri.

In the attacking midfield, Kalle Rahbek arrives from Wofford after a standout season, while freshman Ty Branigan, recommended by 2006 champion Bryan Byrne, is already drawing comparisons to former All-American Luis Silva. Another freshman, Gunnar Franke, brings a unique international background, having grown up in Sweden, Spain, and England.

Vom Steeg also praised the impact of spring training, which allowed the team to integrate newcomers early. "We got our system in place so that when we returned this fall... we just picked up where we left off," he explained.

The Gauchos open their campaign Friday against San Jose State, with a challenging non-conference slate ahead, including matches against ranked opponents Marshall, San Diego, and Oregon State. Vom Steeg believes success in those games could solidify a strong RPI, setting the stage for a deep postseason run.
