UCLA Bruins quarterback Nico Iamaleava has finally addressed the public after a season-ending injury, sharing his thoughts in an Instagram post on Thursday.
The injury occurred on October 10 during the game against Oregon, late in the second quarter. Iamaleava scrambled and was tackled by Ducks defenders Bear Alexander and Jerry Mixon, getting rolled up on the play. He left the game briefly, returned for one play, but then sat out the rest of the second half.
In his statement, Iamaleava expressed his emotions: "Well, I'm heartbroken the way my season ended. I've finally accepted that this year is really over for me. This wasn't a part of the plan, but I believe everything happens for a reason. I gave this game and my brothers everything I had and I'll continue to lean on God and trust His plan. I'll be back."
Head coach Bob Chesney confirmed on Monday, October 19, that Iamaleava would miss the remainder of the season and is expected to undergo surgery.
Ty Dieffenbach has taken over at quarterback, and the seventh-ranked Bruins have continued to perform well. Dieffenbach has thrown for 505 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception while completing 61.4% of his passes.
Iamaleava, a fourth-year quarterback, was on pace to surpass his previous season's numbers. In five games this year, he threw for 982 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions with a 62.1% completion rate, and added 144 rushing yards and a touchdown. The injury will set him back another year.
The Bruins are set to face Nevada at home on Saturday, October 31, at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game airing on the Big Ten Network.
Key Analysis
Iamaleava's injury is a significant blow for the quarterback, who was showing improvement after a challenging previous season. His absence tests UCLA's depth, but Dieffenbach's solid performance has kept the team competitive. The Bruins' upcoming game against Nevada will be another opportunity to maintain their momentum.
