USC coach Lincoln Riley is known for being extremely selective when offering high school quarterbacks, and his 2028 recruiting efforts were no exception. After working out several quarterbacks over the summer, Riley and offensive coordinator Luke Huard still had not extended an offer to any of them. That changed in early August when Frisco Lone Star (Texas) quarterback Trey Wright caught their attention. At the time, Wright was a three-star prospect, but he has since been elevated to four-star status.
Once Riley offered, the Trojans quickly surged to the top of Wright's list, and the Texas native announced his commitment just a week later. USC had identified its lone quarterback target in the 2028 class and went all-in, passing on highly touted local prospects and other five-star talents. The staff was unconcerned with Wright's recruiting ranking because they saw a signal-caller who fits Riley's offense and has drawn comparisons to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray, another Texas product who won the Heisman Trophy under Riley at Oklahoma in 2018.
Those Murray comparisons are only gaining traction as Wright puts up staggering numbers in his junior season. As a sophomore in 2025, he led the nation with 5,826 total yards and accounted for 59 total touchdowns. Now a junior, Wright has been even better, leading Lone Star to a perfect 10-0 record while accounting for 58 total touchdowns (42 passing, 16 rushing) with only one interception. His performance has thrust him into the conversation for MaxPreps and Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Texas and nationally.
Key Analysis
At 5-foot-11, Wright is a dynamic athlete who received Division I basketball offers as a freshman and possesses exceptional playmaking ability with the ball in his hands. That was evident in a highlight-reel touchdown run on Thursday night during Lone Star's blowout win over McKinney North. USC fans have marveled weekly at what the 2028 commit can do on the field, but Wright is more than just a gifted athlete playing quarterback—he can also beat defenses through the air. In early October, he broke his school record for passing touchdowns in a game with seven.
Wright is currently the only commit in USC's 2028 class. He has visited USC twice this fall for games against Oregon and Ohio State, continuing to acclimate to Southern California and the program. He has also embraced a recruiting role, as the Trojans have hosted numerous blue-chip 2028 prospects for marquee matchups at the Coliseum, aiming to stack elite classes on top of their current freshman group.
