Trey Kaufman-Renn, a former Purdue forward and Sellersburg, Indiana, native, has signed with the Kansas Jayhawks amid his ongoing effort to secure an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. The courts granted him a preliminary injunction against the NCAA earlier this month, enabling him to join the Jayhawks.
Kaufman-Renn, often affectionately called TKR during his five years at Purdue, is one of three Kansas players pursuing legal action for another year of college basketball. Kansas head coach Bill Self confirmed that Kaufman-Renn has enrolled in classes and began practicing with the team on Sunday. "Trey Kaufman-Renn, who had a tremendous career at Purdue, has enrolled in classes, and is practicing with us as of Sunday," Self said.
During his time at Purdue, Kaufman-Renn reached the national championship game, the Elite 8, and the Sweet 16, and Self noted that he has been "extremely well-drilled and well-coached." Despite the late timing of his addition, Self believes Kaufman-Renn's basketball IQ will facilitate a quicker transition than most players in similar circumstances.
Kaufman-Renn was selected 59th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the June NBA Draft but did not sign a contract. Kansas was ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 poll on Monday and is scheduled to open the season against Fordham on Monday, Nov. 2.
Key Analysis
Kaufman-Renn's signing with Kansas represents a significant late addition for the Jayhawks, who are ranked 17th in the preseason AP poll. His experience and success at Purdue, including deep tournament runs, could provide valuable contributions. The legal battle for extra eligibility adds a layer of complexity, but his immediate practice participation suggests he is expected to be available. The move also highlights the ongoing trend of players seeking additional years of eligibility through court actions.
