The Toronto Raptors have made a roster move, signing centre Jamarion Sharp while waiving point guard Chucky Hepburn, who sustained a hamstring injury in the team's final preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers in Vancouver.
Sharp, who stands 7-foot-5 and weighs 235 pounds, was named the NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year after a standout season with the Texas Legends. In 39 games (29 starts), he averaged 7.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.1 blocks, and 25.1 minutes per contest. He reached double figures in scoring 14 times, pulled down 10 or more rebounds in 12 games, and recorded six double-doubles. Additionally, he blocked five or more shots in 15 games, including a season-high nine on November 21 against Oklahoma City. Following the G League season, Sharp also appeared in five games for Bayamn in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional in Puerto Rico, according to a press release.
A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Sharp has spent the past two seasons with Texas after a collegiate career that included stops at Mississippi (2023-24), Western Kentucky (2021-23), and John A. Logan College (2019-21).
Why the Raptors Signed Jamarion Sharp
Toronto is in dire need of size, with Jakob Poeltl as the only true centre on the roster. Sharp returns to the Raptors after playing for the team during the Las Vegas Summer League, where he averaged 7.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. After the Summer League showcase in July, Sharp signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, but was waived just before training camp began, paving the way for his return to Toronto. His addition gives the Raptors more frontcourt depth, especially if Poeltl were to suffer an injury during the season.
Will Sharp Grab the Final Two-Way Spot?
Based on this information, it appears the Raptors are still uncertain about who will fill the third two-way spot, though Sharp is a strong candidate. Hepburn seemed to have that spot secured until his injury, but now the Raptors are exploring other options. Toronto is not required to fill that third two-way spot, but it might as well if it has the capacity for another player. Time will tell if Sharp remains with the organization long-term, but his development will be worth monitoring.
Sharp is likely to be available for the Raptors' preseason matchup against the New York Knicks. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET inside Scotiabank Arena. Fans can watch the game on Sportsnet or stream it on the SN Plus app.
