Thunder Push Back on Basket Zaragoza's Claim to Rookie Center Aday Mara

The Oklahoma City Thunder responded on Friday to claims from Spanish basketball club Basket Zaragoza that it retains the playing rights to rookie center Aday Mara. In a statement to Marc Stein, a Thunder spokesperson explained that Mara has competed for three years in NCAA college basketball, and based on NBA advisement, no release from the Spanish team is needed for him to suit up in the NBA.

According to Johnny Askounis of EuroHoops.net, the Spanish newspaper Heraldo de Aragon recently reported that Basket Zaragoza insists it holds Mara's playing rights and intends to prevent him from playing for the Thunder until a financial agreement is reached.
