This Eagles defender’s 2026 season will determine uncertain future

The Philadelphia Eagles are less than a month away from the start of training camp.

Well be counting down the 25 most important Eagles for the 2026 season.

21.

Moro Ojomo 20.

Nolan Smith Nolan Smith is an important player for the Eagles this season and this season is undoubtedly an important one for Smiths future.

Smith, the 2023 first-round pick, had his fifth-year option picked up earlier this offseason, so hes under contract with the Eagles through at least the 2027 season.

But after a campaign that didnt go to plan, the 25-year-old is at a bit of a crossroads with the organization.

Smith has an opportunity to play well and secure a long-term contract.

Or, if he fades away in the rotation or gets hurt, he could just as easily become a trade chip.

Smith has proven he can make an impact.

When healthy, hes one of the best run-defending edge rushers in the NFL.

And over the final 16 games of the 2024 season, including the playoffs, he had 10 1/2 sacks.

Smith was an integral part of the Super Bowl LIX run.

But in that game against the Chiefs, Smith suffered a triceps injury.

He started the 2025 season on IR and was limited to just 12 appearances, three sacks and 11 QB hits.

The Eagles are expecting a bounce-back 2026 season as long as Smith stays healthy.

Hes a bit undersized at 6-foot-2, 238 pounds.

Smith plays aggressive and fearless: sometimes to his benefit, sometimes to a detriment from a health perspective.

If he doesnt get hurt again, Smith has a real chance to be the second starting edge rusher alongside Pro Bowl trade acquisition Jonathan Greenard.

In training camp, Smith will be competing with Jalyx Hunt, who had a breakout season in 2025.

The Eagles also signed Arnold Ebiketie and A.J.

Epenesa to provide some pop in the rotation.

Smiths spring brought good news and bad news.

He was healthy and on the field during OTAs and minicamp practices.

However, he was arrested in May in Georgia.

Smith was charged with speeding and reckless driving, reportedly going 135 mph in a 70 mph zone.

So theres a lot of moving parts and questions surrounding Smith entering training camp.

His contract, his place in the rotation, his sustained health, his off-the-field concerns.

This is a big year for Smiths future in Philadelphia.
