Texas Southern University has finally filled its vacant men's basketball head coaching position, tapping Seton Hall assistant coach Corey Lowery for the role, according to a source who spoke with Chron. The announcement brings closure to a search that stretched nearly four months, making TSU the last Division I program without a permanent head coach.
Lowery's appointment follows the departure of Johnny Jones, who left in April to join LSU's coaching staff. The university had been operating with interim coach Shyrone Chatman, a nine-year Tigers staff member, since April 20. The search process, aided by executive search firm DHR Global, concluded with the identification of finalists, as announced by TSU President J.W. Crawford in a press release.
“The searches for these two critical leadership positions have been thorough and deliberate,” Crawford stated. “We appreciate the dedication and hard work of our search committees and the many individuals who contributed to this process. I look forward to presenting my recommendations to the Board of Regents later this month.”
Key Analysis
Lowery brings a wealth of experience, having spent 27 years in coaching, including 16 as a head coach. His recent tenure includes four seasons on Shaheen Holloway's staff at Seton Hall. Notably, he has prior HBCU head coaching experience, having led Lincoln University in Pennsylvania for two seasons, where he earned the 2021-2022 CIAA Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Lions to a second-place finish in the Northern Division despite a preseason prediction of 10th.
The hire still requires approval from the TSU Board of Regents, which is not scheduled to meet until August 28. With classes beginning August 17, preseason practice is expected to start soon, though the university has yet to schedule an introductory press conference or release its season schedule. The NCAA Division I men's basketball season tips off on November 1.
