Texans GM Nick Caserio: C.J. Stroud Extension Expected After 2026 Season

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio announced on Monday that the franchise plans to secure quarterback C.J. Stroud with a contract extension after the 2026 season concludes. The declaration came a day after the team suffered an unexpected home defeat to the New York Giants.

Stroud is currently in the fourth season of his rookie deal and was eligible for a long-term extension last offseason. However, the two sides could not reach an agreement before the 2026 campaign began. Despite that, Caserio emphasized that the organization remains fully committed to Stroud as its quarterback of the future.

“You can ask C.J. what his thoughts are. We had really good discussions. We were close. I don’t think anybody worried about it,” Caserio said, via team insider Aaron Wilson. “He’s playing good football. That’s no surprise. We supported him all off-season when he was badmouthed for one bad half of football. The contract will take care of itself.”

Caserio added that there was no hesitation from either side. “There wasn’t any reluctance. Couldn’t quite come to agreement. Nobody is discouraged,” he said. “Have a lot of respect for C.J. and [his agent] David [Mulugheta]. At some point, it will take care of itself.”

Stroud and the Texans hold a 2-5 record to start the 2026 NFL season. In Sunday’s loss to the Giants, Stroud completed 17 of 28 pass attempts for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Houston, which has its bye in Week 8, will aim to rebound in a Week 9 matchup against the winless Los Angeles Chargers.

Key Analysis

The Texans’ decision to postpone Stroud’s extension until after the 2026 season suggests a strategic approach to cap management and performance evaluation. With Stroud in his fourth year, the team gains additional time to assess his development while maintaining financial flexibility. Caserio’s public support underscores the organization’s confidence in Stroud’s abilities, even as the team faces early-season struggles. The upcoming game against the Chargers presents a crucial opportunity for Houston to turn its season around.
