Tampa Bay Rays Expected to Exercise $13 Million Club Option on Yandy Diaz

The Tampa Bay Rays are still alive in the postseason, competing in Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. While the team's immediate focus is on advancing to the ALCS and beyond, behind the scenes, preparations for the offseason are already underway.

The Rays are among five teams that have already seen a player become a free agent, as pitcher Aaron Brooks opted for minor league free agency. Several other major league players could also reach the open market due to various contract options, including player, club, and mutual options.

One such player is designated hitter Yandy Diaz, who has a $13 million club option for the 2026 season. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Tampa Bay is expected to exercise that option, a decision that would be well justified.

Why the Rays Should Keep Diaz

After pacing the American League with 180 hits, retaining Diaz is an obvious move. He forms the heart of the Rays' lineup alongside first baseman Jonathan Aranda and third baseman Junior Caminero, a trio that drives the offense. Other contributors like catcher Liam Hicks and outfielders Victor Mesa Jr. and Jonny DeLuca have emerged, but Diaz, Aranda, and Caminero remain the foundational pieces around which the team is constructing its lineup.

Despite turning 35 in August, Diaz shows no signs of decline. He posted an impressive .293/.359/.446 slash line with a 124 OPS+, clubbing 22 home runs and 26 doubles while driving in 85 runs. His consistency is remarkable: he has recorded an OPS+ of at least 110 in nine consecutive seasons. He has settled into the leadoff spot, setting the table for Aranda and Caminero to drive in runs.

Committing $13 million to a single player is significant for the Rays, but Diaz has repeatedly demonstrated he is worth the investment. A player with his track record would command at least double that amount annually on the open market. Trade rumors have swirled around Diaz for years, as the franchise typically looks to move players once they become expensive or aging. However, Diaz has defied that pattern and is expected to return as Tampa Bay's primary designated hitter in 2026.
