The Sun Belt Conference revealed on Thursday a groundbreaking partnership with the newly established TransPerfect San Juan Bowl, which will feature a matchup between a Sun Belt squad and an ACC adversary beginning with the 2024 season.
Amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of bowl games due to ongoing discussions about expanding the College Football Playoff, the Sun Belt has finalized its most financially rewarding bowl agreement to date.
Previously, through 2026, the Sun Belt's bowl affiliations included the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl in Montgomery, the 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, the Myrtle Beach Bowl, and the StaffDNA Cure Bowl in Orlando, Florida. All of these games matched the Sun Belt against other Group of 6 conferences, such as Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, and the American Conference.
The San Juan Bowl stands as the first Sun Belt bowl tie-in that explicitly pairs the conference with a Power 4 opponent. The contest will take place at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking the first-ever FBS bowl game held in Puerto Rico. Hiram Bithorn Stadium has previously hosted MLB games, international soccer matches, and concerts by global artists.
The inaugural San Juan Bowl is scheduled for December 16.
Key Analysis
This agreement represents a significant step for the Sun Belt, elevating its bowl portfolio by securing a matchup against a Power 4 conference. The move not only enhances the conference's visibility but also provides a unique destination for student-athletes and fans. As the bowl landscape evolves, the Sun Belt's proactive approach could serve as a model for other Group of 6 conferences seeking to bolster their postseason opportunities.
