Steelers' Nick Herbig Under Fire After Slow Start

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense finds itself in an unusual position after a strong start to the season. While the unit hasn't been poor, it hasn't been dominant either, especially over the past three weeks. The Steelers allowed 22 points to the Indianapolis Colts and then 27 points in each of their games against the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. As a result, several defensive players are under pressure to step up their production, none more so than linebacker Nick Herbig.

After signing a lucrative contract extension that made him the team's second-highest paid defensive player behind T.J. Watt, Herbig entered the season with heightened expectations. However, the 24-year-old edge rusher has struggled through the first five games, managing just 12 tackles and zero sacks. The question on everyone's mind: is it time to panic about the fourth-year player? The answer is more nuanced than it appears.

Why It's Too Early to Worry

Despite the lack of sacks, there are reasons for optimism. Herbig has recorded only one quarterback hit and one pressure, but he has shown flashes of his athleticism. In pass coverage, he has been targeted twice, and both attempts fell incomplete, according to Pro Football Reference. His speed and agility remain evident on tape, even if they haven't yet translated into splash plays. With plenty of season left, there's time for him to break out of this slump.

Three Concerns Persist for Herbig

However, several issues are worth monitoring. First, Herbig's snap count remains limited; he has played 161 defensive snaps, roughly 52% of the team's total. This continues a pattern from previous seasons, reducing his opportunities to make an impact. Second, the Steelers have utilized him in three-edge-rusher sets, where he often lines up as an off-ball linebacker in the box. While he performs admirably, it's not the ideal role for a playmaking edge rusher. Finally, missed tackles have been a problem. In Week 5, Herbig penetrated the backfield but failed to bring down Jonathan Taylor, allowing a positive play for the Colts. According to PFF, he has missed over 35% of his tackle attempts in 2026.

If this usage pattern continues, Herbig could be in trouble. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will need to find creative ways to get the $25 million linebacker back on track.
