Steelers' New Coaching Staff Seems To Already Have Made A Decision On Roman Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some interesting position battles that are going to take place throughout training camp and the preseason.

The one that has been talked about the most is the quarterback room, specifically how the rest of the group behind Aaron Rodgers is going to shape up.

There are other areas of the offense that are going to be closely watched throughout July and August too though.

This includes the entire right side of the offensive line, as both the guard and tackle spot could change hands, and there is also going to be some battles at wide receiver and running back.

The top two wide receivers in Pittsburgh are already known as the team has acquired both DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.

via trade over the last two offseasons.

They will lead the way in the passing game.

Behind them though, the depth might be considered a little questionable.

Third-year pro Roman Wilson is there, as is a rookie in Germie Bernard.

This has been a highly anticipated battle for the third wide receiver spot on the depth chart, and several different factors will play into the decision.

Beat writer Mike DeFabo spoke about the position battle in a recent article for The Athletic, and he shared that Wilson might have a leg up on Bernard.

"Fans want to look past Wilson and go right to Germie Bernard," DeFabo wrote.

"But Wilson will clearly be WR3 when camp starts.

The question will be how long he can keep it." There is of course a ton of excitement surrounding Bernard after the team traded up in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft to select him.

The fans are going to want to see him on the field early on, but there should also be excitement around Wilson, as he looks to turn his career around after a shaky first two seasons.

Wilson was hurt for almost the entirety of his rookie season in 2024 after being a third-round pick.

It was essentially a redshirt year for the young wide receiver.

He was expected to make an impact in his second season in 2025, but that never quite happened.

He got more experience and had some production, but it became clear that Rodgers did not trust him enough when the organization went out and signed some veteran wide receivers in the middle of the season.

If Wilson wants to keep that third wide receiver spot, he is going to have to be on the same page with the veteran quarterback.

Bernard is experienced and well-versed in football after playing at three different schools in college.

He has been praised heavily by his new teammates and coaching staff, but he is going to have to get past Wilson on the depth chart in order to see the field consistently.

There has been a good amount of discussion about the Steelers potentially signing another veteran wide receiver to add some experienced depth to the room.

This would hurt the snap count of both Wilson and Bernard, which many people are vehemently against.

Getting both wide receivers some significant experience during the 2026 season should be a priority for Pittsburgh.

Even if Wilson wins the third spot at wide receiver, Bernard will still see the field a good bit as the fourth option.

Adding another veteran like Stefon Diggs or DeAndre Hopkins to the room could just disrupt that.

Each player is versatile as they can each play in the slot and on the outside.

It is just going to come down to who can make more plays in training camp and the preseason.

Another factor is going to be the relationship with Rodgers, which is hopefully something that Wilson can work on.
