Steelers' Alex Highsmith Drawing Trade Interest Ahead of NFL Deadline

As the NFL trade deadline approaches on Nov. 10, the Pittsburgh Steelers could find themselves fielding inquiries about one of their defensive stalwarts. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith is a name to monitor in trade discussions.

Highsmith, 29, has been a key component of Pittsburgh's defense in recent years. However, the Steelers have invested in contract extensions for fellow edge rushers Nick Herbig and T.J. Watt over the past two offseasons, casting doubt on Highsmith's long-term future with the team.

Pelissero noted that opposing teams have expressed interest in acquiring Highsmith since last year, but the Steelers have consistently rebuffed those advances. "Other teams have inquired about trading for Highsmith since last year, and the Steelers' answer has always been no," Pelissero wrote. "But they currently have a logjam at edge rusher, with T.J. Watt turning back the clock with a stellar performance this season at age 32, while younger players Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer have part-time roles. Highsmith is still in his prime at age 29 and figures to be the subject of more calls leading up to the deadline."

Highsmith is due $8.8 million for the remainder of the 2026 season and will enter the final year of his contract in 2027, when he is owed $15.5 million with no guarantees. Whether he remains in Pittsburgh or moves elsewhere, he is likely to seek a contract extension in the 2027 offseason—a factor that could influence the Steelers' decision.

The Steelers' current roster composition underscores the challenge of maintaining so many outside linebackers. Pittsburgh opened the season with Highsmith and Watt as primary edge rushers, while Herbig played a hybrid role that involved dropping into coverage or rushing the passer. After a slow start, Herbig saw more time as a traditional edge rusher behind Watt and Highsmith, but with Jack Sawyer also in the mix, the four-man rotation leaves limited snaps for the younger depth players.

Will the Steelers Trade Highsmith?

In the NFL, nothing is ever completely off the table, but the Steelers are expected to swiftly dismiss most offers for Highsmith. Any team would need to present a compelling initial proposal to spark serious talks, and if a suitor is willing to overpay, Pittsburgh might find it difficult to decline. Highsmith would likely command a second- or third-round pick in return, and perhaps more, given that the Steelers view him as a crucial piece for their playoff push in the second half of the season.

A midseason trade appears unlikely, but the offseason could present a different scenario. And as always, if a team comes calling with a substantial offer, the Steelers might be tempted to take the risk of moving on from Highsmith before the season ends.
