Shawn Horcoff's First GM Gig Turns Into a Trial by Fire in Detroit

The first month and a half of Shawn Horcoff's tenure as interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings has been anything but smooth. Since stepping in for Steve Yzerman in September, Horcoff has been thrust into a relentless saga involving former captain Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade in June and was suspended without pay by the team on Thursday after declaring he would sit out until moved.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Horcoff confirmed that the Red Wings are still engaged in negotiations with the clubs on Larkin's approved trade list and that the organization will keep working toward a resolution that benefits both parties.

On Friday's episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, hosts Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton welcomed Jeff Marek, host of The Sheet, to dissect the Detroit situation and weigh whether sympathy for the interim GM is appropriate. Hutton posed the question directly: does one feel for Horcoff in this position, or is it simply the burden that comes with the job? "You wanted to be in this situation, and it's all snowballing on him right now," Hutton noted.

Marek was blunt about the opportunity: "No one is going to say no to this position, even with an interim tag, there's no chance you're going to say no." He also speculated that other front-office members might be irritated that the interim role went to Horcoff rather than themselves.

Marek continued by expressing conditional sympathy: "I would feel bad for Shawn Horcoff if he wasn't able to act with full autonomy here, and make his own decisions, because he's the one that's going to take the bullets for it." He emphasized the gravity of the moment, pointing out that this will be Horcoff's first trade as an NHL general manager unless something else intervenes.

To illustrate the pressure, Marek recalled a story from Brian Burke about his first trade—the Bobby Holik deal between the Hartford Whalers and New Jersey Devils, with Sean Burke and Eric Weinrich going the other way. Burke often described the loneliness of the moment: "There is no assistant general manager, there's no front office staff: there's me. I got to pick up the phone and call Lou Lamoriello." Burke recounted picking up the phone, dialing, getting scared, hanging up, walking around the rink, and repeating the cycle for hours because he had no one to lean on. "This was just me, and I'm about to make my first trade in the NHL. The stress that comes along with that is incredible."

Key Analysis

Marek's sympathy hinges on whether Horcoff can operate independently. If Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch holds final say on any deal—and Marek acknowledged that major decisions are routinely run past ownership—then Marek does feel bad for Horcoff. Still, he concluded, "this is the gig, and no one forced him to take it." The segment underscores the unique pressure of a first-time GM navigating a franchise-altering trade under an interim label.
