The San Jose Sharks have placed right wing Patrick Giles on waivers, according to a report from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The 26-year-old had been listed on non-roster injured reserve after suffering an upper-body injury during the preseason. Team officials anticipate that he will return to the American Hockey League once he is medically cleared to play. Due to his age and service time, Giles must clear waivers before any assignment to the minors can be finalized. If no NHL club claims him, he is expected to report to the San Jose Barracuda.
A native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Giles went undrafted after playing four seasons at Boston College, where he was a teammate of Matt Boldy. He signed with the Charlotte Checkers on an AHL tryout in 2022 and later secured an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers. Giles appeared in 187 regular-season games with Charlotte before making his NHL debut with Florida in October 2024. During that season, he skated in nine games for the Panthers without registering a point. On March 5, 2025, Florida traded him to San Jose in exchange for goaltender Vitek Vanecek.
Following the trade, Giles scored four goals in eight games with the Barracuda, an unusual offensive surge for a 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward known primarily for his defensive play. He also appeared in eight NHL games with the Sharks in 2024-25 and scored one goal. Last season, he skated in three games for San Jose and recorded one assist, his second career NHL point. In the AHL, he posted 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 67 games with the Barracuda, setting career highs in both assists and points. The Barracuda finished the season with a 40-28-2-2 record for 84 points and lost in the qualifying round of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Giles signed a two-year, two-way contract extension with San Jose on May 5. Over his career, he has played 20 NHL games and recorded two points, all without accumulating a single penalty minute.
