Sellers Shines as South Carolina Stuns Oklahoma 42-25 for Third Straight Win

NORMAN, Okla. — South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers put together a standout performance, passing for 301 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 96 yards and two more scores, powering the Gamecocks to a 42-25 victory over Oklahoma on Saturday. South Carolina's defense stifled the Sooners through the first three quarters, limiting them to just 118 total yards and 10 points.

Sellers connected on touchdown passes of 84 yards to DJ Black and 79 yards to Mazeo Bennett Jr., helping South Carolina (5-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) take a commanding 35-10 lead en route to its third straight win. The Gamecocks were coming off consecutive victories over ranked opponents Florida and Tennessee.

"Really awesome night, proud of our football team," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. "We challenged them all week. Nobody in the SEC has been able to do what we did tonight, and that's come off a big win and follow it up the very next week with another big win. This is a big win, to come on the road and play like we did tonight. Our guys deserve it, though, they put a lot into this and I'm really proud of them."

Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3) found some offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, as John Mateer threw two scoring passes to Ivan Carreon to narrow the deficit. Earlier, Kip Lewis returned an interception of Sellers 30 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. It marked Lewis' third career pick-six, matching a school record, but it was one of the few highlights for the Sooners' defense.

"We got our ass whooped tonight in every way," Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said. "Really disappointed. I watched the game, everybody else watched the game. They were a more physical team and created explosive plays. We couldn't get any offensive rhythm in the first half. We're not built to overcome some of the ineptness as a football team that we displayed out there tonight."

After Lewis' interception return, it was all South Carolina. Sellers led the Gamecocks on three consecutive scoring drives, two of which covered 75 yards, as the lead swelled to 28-10 by halftime. The Sooners were booed as they left the field at the break.

"We're frustrated, too," Mateer said. "I won't sleep peacefully tonight and I don't think anybody in this building will. I wish it could have been better. We'll go back to work Monday and do everything we can to make it better."

Key Analysis

South Carolina has now won both of its games in Norman, outscoring Oklahoma 77-34 in those two contests at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The Sooners' defense, which entered the game ranked first nationally in opponent first downs (13.6 per game) and second in third-down conversion defense (23.6%), was overwhelmed, allowing 22 first downs and permitting the Gamecocks to convert 8 of 14 third downs. South Carolina amassed 521 yards of total offense.

Adding to South Carolina's concerns, running back Matt Fuller left the game in the first quarter after carrying four times for 17 yards and did not return. Fuller, who had 513 rushing yards entering the game, is likely done for the season. "It doesn't look good on Matt," Beamer said. "Unless we get some better news overnight, probably season-ending. He's scheduled to have surgery tomorrow morning. It looks like a broke bone in his foot, lower leg area."

South Carolina will host Texas A&M on Saturday, while Oklahoma will travel to face No. 17 Florida on Saturday.
