SEC Power Rankings Week 7: Georgia Claims Top Spot, Kentucky Soars After Stunning LSU

SEC Power Rankings Week 7: Georgia Claims Top Spot, Kentucky Soars After Stunning LSU

Week 6 of the college football season delivered chaos across the nation, and the SEC was no exception. From dramatic finishes to surprising upsets, the conference landscape shifted dramatically, setting the stage for a reshuffled power ranking.

In non-conference action, No. 7 Indiana narrowly escaped Nebraska at home, 20-17, while North Carolina took down No. 25 Pittsburgh, 21-17. Georgia Tech also pulled off a home upset over Duke, 28-25. But the SEC provided the weekend's most shocking moments.

Oklahoma stunned No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry, 27-24, courtesy of a game-winning field goal. The Sooners' defense stepped up, and the victory could be a turning point for their season. Meanwhile, Kentucky continued its surprising run under first-year head coach Will Stein, upsetting No. 10 LSU, 35-34, in overtime at Kroger Field. The Wildcats capitalized on explosive plays and a gutsy two-point conversion by quarterback Kenny Minchey to seal the win.

Arkansas nearly notched its first SEC win but fell to Tennessee, 24-17, while South Carolina dominated No. 16 Florida on the road, 38-19, handing the Gators their second straight loss.

With those results in mind, here's how the SEC Power Rankings shape up for Week 7.

1. Georgia Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0)

Georgia ascends to No. 1 after a hard-fought victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 entering the game, proved their mettle against the No. 6 Crimson Tide. Although Alabama led 14-10 at halftime, Georgia's defense clamped down in the second half, allowing only a field goal. The Bulldogs' balanced attack and timely stops secured a win that could have major College Football Playoff implications. Kirby Smart's program continues to set the standard in the SEC, and this victory adds another signature win to their résumé.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1, 3-1)

Alabama's offense, led by quarterback Keelon Russell, had been firing on all cylinders before running into Georgia's stout defense. Russell struggled to find a rhythm, and the Crimson Tide managed just three points after halftime. The loss drops Alabama to No. 2, but the team remains a playoff contender. If the Crimson Tide can rebound and win out, they'll be right back in the mix.

3. Texas Longhorns (4-1, 1-1)

Texas suffered its first loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion against Oklahoma. Quarterback Arch Manning threw two costly interceptions, and the Longhorns couldn't close out a game they controlled for stretches. Despite the setback, Texas boasts ample talent and will look to bounce back against a reeling Florida team. Manning's consistency will be key to the Longhorns' playoff hopes.

4. Oklahoma Sooners (3-2, 1-1)

Oklahoma's season has been a rollercoaster, but the Sooners delivered when it mattered most against Texas. The defense kept the game within reach, and kicker Tate Sandell drilled the game-winning field goal. The upset gives Oklahoma a much-needed confidence boost and momentum as they prepare to face Kentucky. Beating the No. 1 team in the country is a statement win for head coach Brent Venables.

5. Kentucky Wildcats (5-1, 3-1)

Kentucky continues to exceed expectations under Will Stein. Picked by many to win around four games, the Wildcats are already 5-1 after a thrilling overtime upset of LSU. The game featured explosive plays, turnovers, and momentum swings, but Kentucky never wavered. Minchey's game-winning two-point conversion on a quarterback draw sent Kroger Field into a frenzy. The Wildcats have proven they can compete with the SEC's best and will look to keep rolling against Oklahoma.

6. Ole Miss Rebels (4-1, 2-1)

Ole Miss returned from its bye week with a dominant 52-17 win over Vanderbilt. The Rebels' offense was unstoppable, showcasing the firepower that makes them a dangerous opponent. Their only loss came without star running back Kewan Lacy, and with him back, Ole Miss looks like a team capable of climbing higher. If the Rebels maintain this level of play, they could challenge the conference's elite.

7. Missouri Tigers (5-1, 2-1)

Missouri took care of business against Texas A&M, winning 27-6 at home. The Tigers' offense clicked, and the defense kept the Aggies at bay. Missouri's only loss was a close one to Mississippi State, but they've responded well. With a balanced attack, the Tigers are a team to watch in the SEC race.

8. Tennessee Volunteers (5-1, 2-1)

Tennessee's offense continues to sputter, but the defense has been reliable. The Volunteers escaped Arkansas with a 24-17 win, but questions remain about the offense. Quarterback George MacIntyre has shown promise, and with Faizon Brandon dealing with injuries, MacIntyre may keep the starting job. Tennessee needs more consistency to compete with the SEC's top teams.

9. Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1)

Mississippi State was on bye but dropped a spot as other teams notched key wins. The Bulldogs' 56-23 loss to Alabama highlighted the gap between them and the elite. However, they've shown potential and will look to rebound against LSU. A strong performance could restore their momentum.

10. South Carolina Gamecocks (3-3, 1-3)

South Carolina finally put it all together against Florida, winning 38-19 on the road. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw four touchdown passes, and the Gamecocks controlled the game from start to finish. The win gives head coach Shane Beamer's team something to build on. Next up is a home matchup with Tennessee, where another strong performance could propel them up the rankings.

11. LSU Tigers (4-2, 1-2)

LSU takes a tumble after a stunning overtime loss to Kentucky. The Tigers, once thought to be SEC elites after a 51-10 win over Clemson, have shown inconsistencies. They dominated Texas A&M but fell to Ole Miss and now Kentucky. The defense couldn't get a stop when it mattered, and LSU's playoff hopes are now on shakier ground. A home game against Mississippi State is a must-win.

12. Florida Gators (4-2, 2-2)

Florida's 4-0 start feels like a distant memory after back-to-back losses to Missouri and South Carolina. The Gators' defense had no answers for Sellers and the Gamecocks. First-year head coach Jon Sumrall must find solutions quickly, as Florida faces a tough Texas team next. The Gators need to rediscover their early-season form to stay competitive.

13. Auburn Tigers (3-2, 1-2)

Auburn drops a spot after a bye week. The Tigers have shown flashes but lack offensive consistency. They'll need a much-improved performance against Georgia, which is riding high after beating Alabama. If Auburn can't find rhythm offensively, it could be a long afternoon in Athens.

14. Texas A&M Aggies (3-3, 1-3)

Texas A&M's season has been a disappointment after last year's playoff run. The Aggies fell to Missouri, 27-6, and now sit at 3-3. Head coach Mike Elko needs to turn things around quickly. A matchup with The Citadel offers a chance to get back in the win column, but consistency remains a major issue.

15. Vanderbilt Commodores (3-3, 0-3)

Vanderbilt remains winless in SEC play after a 52-17 loss to Ole Miss. The Commodores have struggled since quarterback Diego Pavia's departure, and five-star freshman Jared Curtis is still developing. A home game against Arkansas, also seeking its first SEC win, presents a golden opportunity for Vanderbilt to break through.

16. Arkansas Razorbacks (2-4, 0-3)

Arkansas stays at the bottom after a narrow 24-17 loss to Tennessee. The Razorbacks were competitive but couldn't finish. First-year head coach Ryan Silverfield has his work cut out for him. A road game at Vanderbilt is a chance to finally secure that elusive first SEC victory. Building consistency and depth will be crucial for Arkansas to climb out of the basement.
