Following the Sharks' recent signing of Macklin Celebrini to a five-year extension, general manager Mike Grier outlined two additional objectives for the summer. The first was accomplished on Friday with Collin Graf's three-year deal, leaving the second—securing forward Will Smith—still in progress and likely requiring time to finalize.
Smith, who became extension-eligible last month alongside Celebrini, is a priority for the organization. Grier expressed a strong desire to keep the young forward long-term, stating that while they hope to reach an agreement, they are prepared to navigate the season and next summer if necessary.
The 21-year-old, selected fourth overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, had a standout season at Boston College before joining San Jose, recording 25 goals and 46 assists in 41 games. In his rookie NHL campaign, Smith tallied 45 points in 74 games, finishing sixth in Calder Trophy voting. Last season, he improved to 24 goals and 35 assists in 69 games, ranking second on the team in scoring behind Celebrini.
Market Dynamics and Financial Flexibility
The current market for players coming off entry-level contracts has shifted, with many securing five-year deals that buy out only one unrestricted free-agent year, and annual salaries surpassing $10 million. Smith's camp is expected to seek a similar structure. Fortunately for Grier, the Sharks have significant cap space projected for the 2027-28 season, thanks to the rising salary cap and over $20 million in expiring contracts. PuckPedia estimates over $30 million available next summer, providing ample room to accommodate Smith's extension while also addressing Yaroslav Askarov's restricted free agency.
Comparable to Smith is Adam Fantilli of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who was drafted one spot ahead of him in 2023. Both players have similar point-per-game rates, with Fantilli coming off a 59-point season. As Fantilli is currently a restricted free agent, his eventual contract could serve as a benchmark for Smith's negotiations. If so, Grier may need to wait for that deal to be finalized before making progress on Smith's extension.
