AROUND VT Special Olympics MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.

The Team Vermont June 24 report from the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games featured wins in Unified Basketball, Athletics and Swimming competitions.

Swimming: Finn Schneider, of Middlebury, took home a Gold Medal in his 500-yard Freestyle and a Silver Medal in his 200-yard Medley; time for his Gold medal 500-yard swim was 7:00.31.

Of note, Finn completed an Ironman and the Boston Marathon in his training for USA Games; also, his service dog, Toby, was there to cheer him on.

Daniel Goodrow, of Essex, placed Fourth in his 50-yard Freestyle.

Athletics: Kevin Conger, of Williston, earned a Gold Medal in the Running Long Jump; his distance was 16 feet 6 inches which is a personal best for Conger.

Lindsay Arthurs, of Burlington, scored a Silver Medal in a 5,000-meter final (5K); her time was 25:44.29.

Her service dog River joined her on the podium.

Unified Basketball: Vermont played Missouri and took a 29-9 win.

YOUTH NEWS Summer meals All children ages 0-18 can eat summer meals for free in Vermont.

Theres no paperwork, no registration, and no ID needed.

Summer meals can be found statewide at a variety of sites, including libraries, parks, pools, churches, camps and schools.

This year, Hunger Free Vermont offers a new map tool for residents to find their nearest summer meal site.

Summer meals are part of a federally funded reimbursement program, administered by Vermont Agency of Education.

Local sponsors across the state work with the agency to help order, prepare, and distribute food to sites accessible to the public in eligible locations.

The Vermont Language Justice Project has produced translated summer meals videos in 19 languages, and Hunger Free Vermont provides translated outreach materials in 13 languages.

AROUND TOWN Courthouse celebration RUTLAND The Rutland County Courts will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from 11 a.m.

to 1 p.m.

Thursday, July 2, at Rutland County Courthouse, 83 Center St., Rutland.

The event is free and open to the public.

Hosted by Vermont Superior Court in Rutland and Rutland County Bar Association, the celebration will include an overview of the Declaration of Independence by Judges Cortland Corsones, Susan McManus, Alexander Burke, Karl Anderson and Charles Romeo, followed by a ringing of the courthouse bell, the Rutland County Bar re-taking of their oath and 250th-themed cake and other refreshments.

Kids games and activities will also be offered, along with a showing of the musical 1776.

Complimentary Pocket Constitutions with the Declaration of Independence included will also be given to attendees.

The celebration is part of a series of events sponsored by the Vermont judiciary.

Books fire sale CASTLETON All books must go since Friends of Castleton Free Library is losing its storage space.

Sale starts right after the parade ends; from 10:30 a.m.

to 2 p.m.

July 3, at Castleton Recreation Center (behind the library).

Bring a box or large bag and fill it with curated adult and childrens books.
