Robert Griffin III, the only Heisman Trophy winner in Baylor history, has confirmed his interest in the school's vacant head football coaching position. During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show on Monday, Griffin revealed that he has already discussed the job with Baylor athletic director Doug McNamee. When asked if he would be interested, Griffin replied, 'Yes, 100 percent,' according to ESPN.
Griffin, who led Baylor to a 10-3 record and a Heisman-winning campaign in 2011, believes his deep ties to the program make him a strong candidate. 'If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn't just respectable on the football field, but the fans can be proud of, they need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor,' he said. 'So yeah, I would 100 percent be interested.'
Baylor dismissed Dave Aranda following a loss to Kansas this past weekend. Aranda compiled a 40-40 record during his tenure with the Bears. Joe Klanderman has been named interim head coach.
Griffin's Baylor Legacy
Griffin's connection to Baylor runs deep. In his Heisman season of 2011, he threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns while adding 699 rushing yards and 10 more scores. That year concluded with a 67-56 victory over Washington in the Alamo Bowl. Over four years with the Bears, Griffin won 23 games, passing for 10,366 yards and 78 touchdowns, and rushing for 2,254 yards and 33 touchdowns.
After being selected second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft, Griffin played seven seasons in the NFL before transitioning to broadcasting. He currently works as a college football analyst and broadcaster for Fox Sports.
Other Potential Candidates
Baylor's head coaching job could be one of several openings after the 2026 season, and the Bears might have access to some prominent names. Lincoln Riley's name has already surfaced as a possibility; the Texas native is under pressure at USC following a loss to Wisconsin this past weekend.
The Bears finish their regular season with games against UCF this weekend, followed by Iowa State, BYU, Texas Tech, and Houston. Baylor is 4-3 overall and has lost two consecutive games.
