The Detroit Red Wings have called up goaltender Michal Postava on an emergency basis, a move that became necessary after John Gibson departed the team's most recent game with an upper-body injury.
Postava is projected to back up Daniil Tarasov when the Red Wings welcome the Vegas Golden Knights to Little Caesars Arena on Thursday, Nov. 5. This marks Postava's second stint with the Red Wings this season.
The 24-year-old netminder arrives in Detroit fresh off a standout month. He was named the AHL goaltender of the month for October after posting a 4-0 record with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage. In five starts with the Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2026-27 season, Postava has compiled a perfect 5-0-0 mark to go along with a 1.20 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage.
Postava earned his first career NHL victory on Oct. 26 against the Edmonton Oilers, making 24 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping all three shootout attempts he faced. The 6-foot-1, 222-pound goaltender made his NHL debut in relief on Oct. 22 against the Vancouver Canucks, turning aside 7 of 8 shots in the third period.
Key Analysis
Postava's promotion comes at a critical juncture for Detroit, as the team must navigate the absence of Gibson, its presumed starter. The young goaltender has demonstrated remarkable poise and consistency in the AHL, and his brief NHL appearances have been encouraging. With Tarasov slated to handle the starting duties, Postava's reliability as a backup will be tested immediately against a potent Vegas offense. The Red Wings will need Postava to maintain his stellar form to keep the team competitive while Gibson recovers.
