The New York Rangers have burst out of the gates this season, boasting a 4-1 record and riding a four-game winning streak. A significant factor behind this early success has been the standout play of one particular forward line.
Despite preseason uncertainties about the team's composition, the Rangers have quickly demonstrated that they are vastly improved from last year, as evidenced by their first five games. The franchise has benefited from new faces making immediate contributions, particularly on offense, where new forwards have bolstered the scoring attack. Additionally, the defense has been revamped and looks much stronger on the blue line, while goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been exceptional to start the campaign.
While there are many positive aspects to the Rangers' game, the performance of their first line stands out as one of the most impressive. This unit will be crucial to the team reaching its full potential, and so far, they have delivered.
First Line Thriving at 5-on-5
Entering the season, there was debate about whether Pavel Dorofeyev should be placed on the top line. However, the Rangers had a trio that had found considerable success after the Olympic break: Mika Zibanejad centering Alexis Lafreniere and rookie Gabe Perreault. Their strong chemistry made it logical for head coach Mike Sullivan to keep the line intact to start the year, especially with a shortened training camp and preseason. Thus far, Sullivan's decision has paid off, as the group has excelled at 5-on-5.
The first line has posted an expected goals for percentage (xGF%) of 53.6%, and their actual goals for percentage (GF%) is a perfect 100%, with three goals scored and none allowed. They also boast a high-danger chances percentage of 56.32%, and have generated the most high-danger chances for the team at even strength. Overall, the line has been dominant, combining for 14 points this season.
As the season progresses, the continued strong play of this group will remain vital for the Rangers. Moreover, there is reason for optimism that they will only improve, with Perreault and Lafreniere showing signs of development.
