HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders' training camp continued to heat up on Day 8, with competition fierce from the opening whistle. The team's new direction under head coach Klint Kubiak is becoming increasingly clear, as themes of efficiency, authenticity, and a singular focus on winning dominate the narrative.
Players and coaches alike are praising the streamlined operations and the purposeful atmosphere. Defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, who previously experienced camp in Philadelphia, noted the stark difference in pace and intentionality. "Everything's so efficient here," he said. "Going from period to period, from individual to team to seven-on-sevens, special teams periods. It's all going quickly. It feels intentional, purposeful, and obviously physical."
Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the no-nonsense approach that Kubiak has instilled. "What you see is what you get. It's no nonsense. There's not a lot of fluff. This is football. It's ball 24/7 here. And if you're not a tough guy mentally and physically, if you don't like to sit through 18 hours of meetings and practice for three hours, this probably isn't the place for you."
Offensive line coach Rick Dennison highlighted the absence of personal agendas, a mindset that unifies the team. "There's no agendas. We're all trying to get better. It's going to take all of us. I think he's done a really good job, but I kind of expected that when I decided to come here."
Top Veterans Shine
Quarterback Kirk Cousins continued to impress, showcasing his precision and leadership. He demonstrated his ability to read defenses, look off safeties, and deliver accurate throws, serving as a mentor to younger quarterbacks. Azzanni praised Cousins' understanding of the timing-based offense, noting, "Kirk's really neat because within this offense he knows, 'Hey, when you turn around that ball is going to be on you.' It's easier to teach young receivers Kirk's style because we don't have to mess around with all the different looks."
Linebacker Nakobe Dean, known for his athleticism, also displayed his football IQ, a trait he attributes to his engineering background. "The mental part of the game is everything for me," Dean said. "I feel like it's not only my great equalizer, it's my superpower."
Punter AJ Cole delivered a spectacular 80-yard punt, reinforcing his status as the league's best. Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis praised Cole's leadership and work ethic, saying, "I think AJ Cole is a guy that's definitely underappreciated around the league. He's a guy that I think deserves to be a leader."
Defensive tackle Jonah Laulu continued his strong camp, earning praise from veteran Kwity Paye. "He's been balling," Paye said. "He put in a lot of work this offseason. You see him every day in the building, he's one of the first people in the building working and wanting to get better."
Safety Isaiah Pola-Mao showed physicality in coverage and on special teams, while linebacker Amari Burney made plays in the passing game, earning cheers from the defensive sideline.
Rookie Standouts
Quarterback Shedeur Sanders bounced back from a rough day, throwing only his first interception of camp. He displayed poise and accuracy, developing chemistry with fellow rookie Malik Benson. "They're good people," offensive coordinator noted. "They naturally gravitate to each other off the field."
Offensive lineman Trey Zuhn showcased his versatility, playing multiple positions. Coach Dennison praised his adaptability, saying, "I think it's just versatility. He's got a good skill set. We're trying to find the best five."
Wide receiver Malik Benson continued to impress, solidifying his role as the WR3. Azzanni, however, remains cautious about overpraising the rookie. "I don't want to pat him on the head too much because he's a puppy," he said. "I keep him on his toes and keep him uncomfortable."
Undrafted free agent defensive end David Walker also caught attention with his athleticism and work ethic, potentially earning a practice squad spot with a path to the active roster.
