CINCINNATI — With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Pittsburgh Pirates are scouring the market for bullpen upgrades, and one name that has emerged on their radar is San Diego Padres left-handed reliever Adrian Morejon. According to MLB reporter Francys Romero, the Pirates are among the teams "closely monitoring" Morejon, alongside the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, with the lefty receiving "significant trade interest" across the league.
The Pirates' pursuit of Morejon is an ambitious move, but it underscores their urgency to bolster a relief corps that has been a weak point this season. Pittsburgh has already traded for right-hander Camilo Doval from the Yankees, but they are clearly looking to add more firepower before the Aug. 3 deadline.
Why Morejon is a Prime Target
Morejon has been one of baseball's most effective relievers in 2026, posting a stellar 3.07 ERA across 51 appearances and 58.2 innings, with 67 strikeouts against just 15 walks, a .221 opponent batting average, and a 1.09 WHIP. While he stumbled out of the gate with a 5.57 ERA in his first 18 games, he has been nearly untouchable since, recording a 1.67 ERA over his last 33 outings and 37.2 innings, fanning 41 batters while walking only 10.
Advanced metrics paint an even rosier picture for the 27-year-old. Morejon excels at inducing weak contact, generates plenty of swing-and-miss, and possesses a 99 mph fastball. His strikeout rate sits at an impressive 27.8%, while his walk rate is a minuscule 6.2%. In today's postseason landscape, where elite bullpens often separate champions from also-rans, adding a pitcher of Morejon's caliber could be a game-changer for any contender.
Will a Deal Materialize?
On the surface, the Pirates' interest in Morejon makes perfect sense given their bullpen needs. However, acquiring him will not come cheap. As a high-value reliever, Morejon would command a substantial trade package, but he is also slated to become a free agent next season. Pittsburgh must weigh whether surrendering top prospects for a potential rental is a prudent investment.
Complicating matters further, the Pirates already boast three left-handed relievers in Mason Montgomery, Gregory Soto, and Evan Sisk, who is expected to return from injury soon, all of whom have enjoyed solid campaigns.
