Phillies Urged to Swap Orion Kerkering for Red Sox All-Star MVP Jarren Duran

Following yet another underwhelming postseason exit, the Philadelphia Phillies are under pressure to reshape their roster and make another run at a World Series title with their current core. While stars like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and the entire starting rotation are expected to remain, almost every other area of the team could be subject to change this winter.

One glaring need is in the outfield, which has been a persistent weakness. In a recent Bleacher Report article, analyst Zachary D. Rymer predicted that the Phillies will trade reliever Orion Kerkering to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for All-Star Game MVP Jarren Duran, a move that would inject new life into Philadelphia's outfield.

Rymer's proposed challenge trade would send Duran, a left-handed hitter, to the Phillies. Notably, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was with the Red Sox when Duran was drafted in 2018, suggesting a potential interest in the outfielder. Duran would represent a clear upgrade over Brandon Marsh, who struggled mightily in the second half of the 2026 season. Marsh was among the worst players in MLB after the All-Star break, while Duran, despite a down year in which he posted a 0.4 bWAR, 20 home runs, a .207 batting average, and a 76 OPS+, would still be an improvement.

Key Analysis

For the Phillies, parting with Kerkering makes sense. The reliever is in need of a change of scenery, and a move to Boston's bullpen as a depth option could benefit both parties. The Red Sox might initially demand more for Duran, but after his 2026 struggles and with only two years of club control remaining (through 2028), they may be willing to sell low. Acquiring Duran would fill an outfield void for Philadelphia, while Kerkering could serve as a valuable trade chip. Although the prediction is a long shot, it is the type of bold move Dombrowski should pursue this offseason. If Kerkering can net a player like Duran, the Phillies should not hesitate to pull the trigger.
