The Philadelphia Phillies are observing the MLB postseason from afar, following a season that ended short of their lofty expectations.
After a disappointing campaign, the organization now shifts its focus to the offseason, determined to find avenues for improvement.
Despite a remarkable comeback from 10 games below .500 to secure a playoff berth, the team once again failed to meet its potential. The Phillies boast a talented veteran core and one of the league's premier starting rotations, yet that proved insufficient to advance past the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Round.
Now, Philadelphia returns to the drawing board, seeking ways to enhance a roster that is aging. With the championship window potentially narrowing, it is crucial that the Phillies execute this offseason effectively.
Some positive news awaits: two burdensome contracts are set to expire, providing significant financial relief.
Phillies Have Two Big Deals Coming off the Books
Philadelphia has never been shy about spending, whether via trade or free agency, making them one of the most aggressive teams in the league. That approach has led to a high payroll but also some regrettable contracts.
While several long-term deals remain on the books, the expiring contracts of Taijuan Walker and Nick Castellanos will help alleviate the payroll burden. Both players underperformed relative to their salaries, and the team chose to move on before their deals concluded.
Castellanos was owed just under $20 million this season, while Walker was set to earn $18 million. That is a substantial sum for two players who either were not with the team at the start of the year or were released early, as was the case with Walker.
Although other undesirable contracts persist, these two expirations will provide some relief. With nearly $40 million coming off the books, the Phillies will have greater flexibility to address their needs this winter.
