As Friday night approached, the Philadelphia Phillies were on the cusp of securing a postseason berth. Yet, facing a Tampa Bay Rays squad with little left to play for, they suffered another defeat.
On Friday, the Phillies once again had an opportunity to punch their playoff ticket with some external help. But they failed to secure a victory, and the San Diego Padres couldn't provide the needed assistance.
With Cristopher Sanchez taking the mound, this was a disheartening loss for Philadelphia—one they desperately needed. The left-hander did his part, pitching seven innings and yielding just two runs. However, the Phillies' offense was completely stifled by Freddy Peralta and the Rays' bullpen.
The team's ongoing offensive woes have become a critical concern, and being held scoreless in a game of such importance on Friday is nothing short of startling.
While the Phillies may still control their own destiny, the outlook is far from encouraging.
Magic Number Remains at Two
For what seems like an eternity, the Phillies have been on the verge of clinching a playoff spot but have repeatedly fallen short. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks have caught fire, winning six consecutive games and now trailing Philadelphia by just one game entering Saturday.
In contrast, the Phillies have dropped three straight and are 4-6 over their last 10 contests. This recent slide has to be cause for serious concern.
Compounding matters, inclement weather in the Northeast could jeopardize whether Philadelphia can even play its remaining games. Despite the grim situation, the Phillies still need just one win and one Diamondbacks loss to secure a playoff berth.
Saturday is expected to be a bullpen game, and the team might have to rely on Zack Wheeler on Sunday. Using Wheeler on the final day of the season is far from ideal, but the Phillies have backed themselves into a corner with their inability to close out games.
Given how poorly the offense has performed, a bullpen game on Saturday could spell trouble for Philadelphia.
